My right knee has been a bit tight. Today there's minor pain..it started a few days after i practiced with someone for 2 hours...also play at work and played a tournament. I don't notice nothing when i play.

Should i just lay it off for a while till it gets better?

It is very important to warm up and cool down before and after you play. A lot of ppl tend to forget or are too lazy to bother. It doesn't matter if you are a gymnast or a big block of wood. Any kind of stretching relief for your body's various tendons, muscles and tissue is good for you.

Make sure you are eating protein in your diet. Try to avoid too much carbs and have plenty of greens.

Knees are supported by thigh muscles and hip muscles and posterior muscles and calf muscles and ankle tendons etc. So maybe you are not moving correctly ? Some mechanical instability or over-strain ?


Also I am not a physician or a doctor, so go see a doctor /chiropractor / physiologist etc.

If you're fairly new to table tennis, could be your tendons and ligaments aren't conditioned. I had knee pains when I first started playing because they weren't used to crouching and lateral movements. Knee straps work for this kind of knee pain and they're fairly inexpensive, under $20. If that's not your problem and the pain doesn't go away, you oughta go see a doctor instead of relying on strangers on the Internet.

Yes. The only answer to this question is yes. Lay off until there is no pain. I'm no doctor either, but the prescription for minor knee pain is rest, ice, compression, elevation. At least do the rest and ice part. Ice is cheap, does no harm, and it works wonders.

As BRS said, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE) is the first line intervention for joint pain. You can take an NSAID to reduce inflammation and pain (ibuprophen or naproxen).

I work in a sports med/physical medicine and rehab hospital. Your leg has several muscles both above and below the knee, and to the right and left of the knee. If you muscles are overdeveloped on one side and underdeveloped on the other, it creates what is called a "Patellar Tracking" issue. This means your knee cap is being pulled toward the direction of the underdeveloped musculature and literally scrapes on the end of the Femur where it usually sits in a groove.

The strap that Gman shows addreses distal/proximal (up and down the leg) tracking issues, but not lateral (side to side).

Do RICE first. If it resolves, great. If not, see a doctor and he may refer you to a PT to help you create a more balanced musculature around the knee.

Appreciate the concerns/tips.

I may have made it sound a bit worse than it is just by posting. I never thought about the doctor; it is something that nags me a little rather than concerns me. I read several posts around the net and their knee pains are quite a bit worse than mine, so I thought I'd post and see if anyone would tell me to play through them.. I know pros play through lots of minor injuries and I've seen that knee strap

I don't want to retire with injuries later tho so rest is good.

I've been applying some chinese medicinal oil and it got a bit better today. Interesting enough, my mom's knee pains were alleviated by blow-dry (advice from someone that knows acupuncture), to get rid of water in the knee. The medicinal oil also leaves the knee a bit hot.

I don't warm up enough tho :^) , and it probably doesn't help that I play in leather shoes at work :lol: Being lazy as I am, I'll try to do some warm-up at least for more intense stuff at clubs.

I'm not new to TT. I've played through some minor wrist/shoulder problems. The shoulder problem was more due to incorrect movements. The wrist problems seem to actually go away faster if I keep playing , except that time I snapped it a bit during play (I stopped for one week).

I read somewhere that left knee problems are more common for right-handers, but in my case it's the right knee. I do play a lot of loops where I place weight on that knee, and also when I try to reach wide forehand. There are probably some footwork improvements to be made.

I think there's a good chance the knee strap may help after a few more days rest

What helped me a lot was understanding that knee pain often comes from tight muscles in the hip and quads area.
I stretched my hips and quads and my knee pain was gone... :o

Eventually what helped was switched to long pips to reduce movement. No loops. Now the pain's gone. :rofl:

The knee strap didn't do much.
