Today at practice I rolled my ankle very badly... It swelled the size of an egg on one within mins...

I've been putting it on ice one and off, and the swelling has gone down a lot... still quite painful though. I quite sure nothing is broken or fractured, as I can still put my full weight on it, it just feels very sore around the joint...

I think I'll be out for a few weeks at least.

Any tips on what to do, and to speed up the healing process?

Thanks guys!

Ouch, tough break  Just try to get plenty of rest. In the meantime, I bet you could get a lot of good serving practice in...

You certainly won't be kicking thugs out of your block for awhile! :(

You can do a number of things for your ankle. 200 to 400 mg Ibuprofin for starters. A few Fosters wouldn't hurt either. Some like salt soaks, I don't. Get support. Tape is OK, but a special ankle canvas sock/support with laces that you wear under your shoe is great. Combat boots give nice support too, and make you look like Rambo to boot! Lay off of the heavy stuff. When you sit at the computer, roll a can of something with your heal and arch. You have to gently exercise the ankle a bit at a time.

When I get an ankle twist, I just laces the shoes even tighter and walk it off. I do the treatment AFTER the sport is over. The worst one was when someone crossed over the net line in volleyball to spike. He landed on my side of the court and I landed on his foot and rolled the living daylights outta my ankle. It took 5 weeks to get rid of the pain, but I was road marching two days later and playing basketball a week later.

Thanks for the tips Der_Echte!

Yeah this one was pretty bad too, felt like my foot was at 90deg to my leg!

I got one of those tight elastics socks and some anti-inflammatry cream, and I still put some ice on every few hours, it's still got a lot of swelling...

Cheers!

Hi Haggisv,

Best tips for any sprain.. Immediate.

1) Rest
2) ICE ICE ICE for first 48 hours, on for 15 minutes every hour..
3) Compression
4) Elevation

Then
5) No Alcohol - bad for healing process.
6) Heat after first 48 hours.

Heat too early is bad for the injury.

Cheers, (as you know I have done quite a few injuries )
Hope you are up and about soon.

Sounds like you've got most of the bases covered, haggisv. The only other thing I can think of that helps speed up the healing process is ultrasound therapy, but it may not be available or affordable. It's also not readily done on ameteur athletes but reserved for the pro's.
I think the ice, ibuprophen (or acetamenophen), rest and a tensor bandage may be all that's really effective.
Good luck, hope you're up and around soon.
:D

Thanks for the tips and concern guys! I'm finally back from my break!

After almost 2 weeks (of lots of fishing and swimming), it's feel a lot better, and I can walk normally, but it's still painful when I twist it a bit....

I'll bandage it right it tomorrow, and will try and have a hit... see how it goes... Won't be back to normal for a few weeks I think...

I might get some physio treatment, might speed uyp recovery.

Cheers!

Glad to hear you're up and around, haggisv. :D
you can't go wrong with a little physio to finish off the healing process.

Thank you guy, yes really glad to be back! I missed you guys and this forum!

The resort we stayed at was supposed to have broadband, but they were having all sort of problems with it, they kept promising it would be fixed soon, but they never got it going...so I never got to use it... Oh well, it was a REAL break then I guess...

Three months later, how is the ankle?

Some of these twists you don't heal 100% right away and can easily reinjure. Sometimes it takes over a year to get back 100%. I had a stretch of ten years where I would sprain the ankle bad, get back to 80 percent, then go through cycles where I roll it lightly twice a year to go back down to 60% and heal back to 80%, but never could quite shake it off untill I had two years without rolling it.

You still got the injury lingering a bit, or are you now 100%?

Hey Haggisv,
Glad your back.
I had a similar injury with a tourney the next day. I put ankle splints on and taped it with bout 2 rolls of tape so it could not bend. Made things awkward but was able to play. (did more blocking)
Probably made it take longer to finally quit hurting though.
Yep, good time to practice serves. :D
