. . .is a real pain in the heel!

i've been having pain in the back of my heel for weeks now and it is severely limiting my movement. Now i'm thinking maybe it's time to really take up a blocking style - maybe short pips fh and long pips bh. :)

i just read this is a common sports injury for middle aged guys. Which means i'm officially undeniably middle age now!

i also read that tendonitis if ignored increases the risk of tendon rupture. I just read about Reb's injury -- sorry to hear that Reb, i hope i dont end up like you :)

I have problems in my knees, and for that reason I have decided to spend more on shoes (for impact absorbant), and on top of that I use additional gel padding. Perhaps you should do that too, and welcome to the old age league :D

I had a heap of chronic 'degenerative' problems 10 years ago..back, knees, hips, shoulder, elbow, and feet..could hardly move..I initially put it down to years of heavy workouts..until I came across the Tension Myositis Syndrome.
I embraced its recovery principles and all the symptoms just melted away.. a true revelation...and a life changing experience.
I am now 62yo and feel great!..play TT 4xweek..

If that's true, you might want to get a consult first before playing hard...

Hi Addoy, Man you are lucky! You are getting a warning. I got zero warning.
So heed it bro. Do everything you can to avoid a rupture (or a complete snap like I did). But only if you don't want a year off TT of course! Good luck.

Tuffix, I'm particularly interested in what the recovery procedures you embraced were. Can you put some detail here for us, or give us a link please? If there is even one point I don't know, I'd like to. Thanks.

Understandable!

Yeah, they can only aspire to approach the same level, but can never quite reach it. So its completely understandable (none more understandable than speedplay of course)

Understandable!

Sorry to hear about your problems, perhaps its better to go see a doctor then to change your game? Anything that can prevent the pain from getting worse or permanent would be the right thing, right?

I'm thinking of going to a doctor, but if he will probably just tell me one or all of the following:

- to take a long rest from TT
- do some stretching before playing
- don't play while in pain
- take a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug (ibuprofen)
- or wear gel padding under the heel

then would just be telling me something i already know. don't you hate when doctors do that :):)

the style change is more of a long term plan. i don't think my tendons will get better flexibility and strength as I grow (even) older. :)

I'd be looking for a good accupuncturist I think. I'm going to, they can work wonders.

Hi Reb
Thanks for asking...
It is essential to understand the theory in order to appreciate the recovery principles.
The theory is based on differential diagnostics, treating the real cause rather than the symptoms, and the role of the psyche in 'creating' a host of common complaints...as a distraction.
The 'placebo effect' is widely accepted in medical research..it can heal on the basis of the power of suggestion/expectation alone. Its little known counterpart, the 'nocebo effect', has the opposite effect..damaging! Due to our tendancy to think negatively, by default, you can appreciate the potential harm that we may be doing to ourselves.
These are the sorts of dynamics dealt with in the Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), as expounded by Prof. John E Sarno
His NY Times Best Seller, 'Healing Back Pain" has over 350 customer reviews and they make compelling reading as to the efficacy of the treatment. Here's the link
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/04 ... ewpoints=1
For the price of a tensor rubber you could get Sarno's latest book 'The Divided Mind'..a better investment maybe - ha!
The treatment is simply knowledge, and acceptance, of the real cause of the complaint and behaving accordingly. This denies the psyche its agenda and the symptoms disappear.
I could go on...but I hope this at least gives some insight into TMS.
It works!

Unless I've misunderstood Tuffix, this is talking about the power of positive thought as a cure is it not? I think there is something to this, but I've not seen anything concrete to convince me.

I prefer a medicine that will work even if i don't believe in it. :) i don't trust something that requires me to first convince myself into thinking it works before it works. :)

Ibuprofen is also a painkiller, so C will automatically mean B, but the effectiveness of B will be gone...

And on the subject of A: stretching before playing does not help prevent tendon damage (I already pointed this out in Reb's recovery thread)

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to go see a doctor! Tendon damage is a b¨$/# :!:

Not all medical practicioners are equally good at diagnosing sports injuries.

Several years ago I had a hip problem so I went to a physio who referred me to a doctor. After X rays and other tests were inconclusive he referred me to a specialist who told me that the problem was muscular, and that I should see a physio - i.e. back to square 1.

Some time later I went to a physio who specialised in musculo-skeletal problems - he told me I needed to stretch my hip flexors.

I no longer have problems with my hip - by the way I am 55 yo.

In conclusion - it may not be necessary to put up with pain despite advancing middle age - but you may have to try a number of ways before you succeed.

Hi Reb
It's more about accurate thinking than positive thinking, ie understanding the causal connection between emotions and pain symptoms. Once you understand the process the rest falls into place..it's not about blind faith it's about gaining knowledge about the real cause.
My son has been twice diagnosed for a knee reconstruction. I suggested that it could be TMS. He passed on the surgery and has since run a PB for 400mtrs and has played the past 2 seasons of TT comps without any knee issues..makes you wonder doesn't it?
Some other tantalising back facts are:
"up to 85% of patients with lower back pain cannot be given a definitive diagnosis" ( New England Journal of Medicine)
"Surgery has been found to be helpful in only 1% of cases of lower back pain" (US Dept of health study)..what about the other 99%!!!!
"there is no correlation between back abnormailities and back pain"
( New England Journal of Medicine)..this is a revelation in itself
It these sorts of 'official' conclusions don't red flag conventional diagnostics, nothing will.
I am glad that I passed on my double discectomy!
I have no doubt that recognition of TMS will be part of mainstream medicine in due course. At the moment it is leading edge.
The reader reviews at the link I included are pretty convincing I think>
Must go now, the courier has just arrived with my Acoustic blade - :D
