Yep, it's true:

International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Adham Sharara has revealed to insidethegames he is to step down from his position in September to seek election to the newly created role of chairman in order, among other goals, to help generate increased competition to Chinese dominance in the sport.

See more here:

Since he was only just elected, it does make you wonder if there was more to it than that...

haha I was just going to post this.

The "China Crisis" is a smoke screen as usual. The main thing happening here is Ebby Schoeler henchman and Adham Sharara yes man Thomas Weikert will become the new ITTF President without being elected. I expected Weikert to somehow weasel his way in as the next ITTF president following Adham, but not have practically a full term he didn't deserve simply handed to him.

Meanwhile, with the previously non-existent position of ITTF Chairman, Adham will still control the ITTF Board of Directors, so it's status quo. Weikert's shady takeover of the ITTF Presidency with Adham still pulling the strings is the real story here.

Exclusive: Sharara to step down as ITTF President to deal with China crisis

By Mike Rowbottom

International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) President Adham Sharara has revealed to insidethegames he is to step down from his position in September to seek election to the newly created role of chairman in order, among other goals, to help generate increased competition to Chinese dominance in the sport.

Sharara, a 61-year-old Canadian born in Cairo who took up his current position within the ITTF in 1999, will be replaced by Thomas Weikert, head of the German Table Tennis Association who is currently Deputy President of the ITTF.

Sharara plans to remain involved by standing for the new position of ITTF chairman, which will have lesser responsibilities.

"At this stage in my life, and after 15 years of being President of the ITTF, preceded by four years as Deputy President, this new position would suit me perfectly," he told insidethegames on the eve of the ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Table Tennis Championships, which is due to open in Tokyo tomorrow.

"This would keep me involved in the ITTF but without the day-to-day operational responsibilities that I have now.

"This will also give me more time to run for positions in international sports bodies, which I have not done so far in order to focus on ITTF business."

Sharara believes the future health of his sport depends upon a greater balance of competitiveness between European nations and those in Asia, most notably the country which has dominated the medals tables for the last 20 years - China.

Sharara claimed the current dominance of China - which has won the last five men's individual world titles, the last 10 women's world titles and the last six world team titles - as "a real problem".

In 2001, just two years after taking over as ITTF President, he warned the sport would become "boring" if China continued to dominate, as they had at that year's World Championships in Osaka and at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Sharana claimed there that there is no imminent change in China's domination of the sport at world.

"This is a real problem," he told insidethegames.

"I intend to take time out from the ITTF Presidency by retiring this September and spending more time independently to help Europe and other parts of the world to rise and challenge the Chinese dominance.

"I believe that this will generate a lot of interest in our sport and will make for a healthier balance.

"Of course the Chinese deserve the results they are getting because of their very hard work and dedication to excellence.

"But at the same time to make any sport interesting we need a rivalry and unpredictable results.

"It will take time, but eventually it will happen."

I was  until I read MNNB's post. ;( But there's a reason why he stops as president of the ITTF. Or he might have been re-elected just to get that weasel in and take that role in the organisation.

Is it sure that that Weikert guy can be elected without elections?

Still good news, because two guys can disagree when money comes in and that might be an opportunity for good hearted ITTF men to take the presidency in the future.

According to member "Mastermind"

Quote:
According to the ITTF Constitution, there is no such a position in the ITTF.

To change that requires a)a proposition to the AGM and b)2/3 vote in favor.

There is no such a proposition to the AGM 2014.

I'm sure this was in the works even before Adham won the election against Bosi. It was getting a little too hot in the k-itchen for Sharara with all the scandals coming to light. This keeps Adham in the driver's seat but gets him out of the crosshairs. Remember Adham's relationship with TMS. Most of the ITTF's revenues still flow through Adham and his hand-picked successor Weikert is OK with that.

With Weikert (the understudy of long pips hater Ebby Schoeler) as ITTF president and Kagin Lee (the man responsible for the ban of Joola Timeless) now in charge of approving rubbers, things will likely get even worse for long pips and anti players.

If the banning of Timeless is the beginning of banning anties I can say it is time to find another sport.

Sharara was elected to the newly created position of "Chairman of the ITTF" at the ITTF Annual General Meeting held in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday 30th April 2014. At the meeting 80% of the delegates voted in favor of creating this position; Sharara received 90% of the votes cast. Was there even an opponent?

I think there was something on the agenda about doubling the minimum height of the service toss. Anyone know the outcome of that?
