The ITTF has published the Board Of Directors and the Annual General Meeting minutes on the 2014WTTC homepage.

I just had time to take a quick look... What do you think about it ?

ITTF refuses to slack off the T3 requirements on the plastic balls.

ITTF BoD Minutes, Tokyo, May2 2014.

    5. Annual reports from commissions and working groups:

the Board approved the following reports:
5.1 Athletes’ Commission (document G1) and noted that:

  • - 4 manufacturers had approved balls but had also requested some relaxation in the tolerances for weight, bounce and hardness in order to get better and more durable balls.
  • - An extension of until 1 Jan 2016 had been agreed with the manufacturers for the modified tolerances after which the current requirements of T3 would be implemented.

--------------
Comments: It looks like DHS has informally asked from ITTF for a mass production of heavier and harder balls, and the request was suspended till 2016.

However, T3 weight and hardness allowance for the 40+ ball may be re-considered some later day, so that manufactures could produce a better durable ball..

Till than, the DHS balls you find on general marketplace gonna to be rather CRACKY..
We have now got a clear video evidence of the ball's instability during china nationals training play. Not so good for a common ball consumers. Sorry.

This is interesting from the Athletes commission:

Quote:
3. Rubbers Test
We have received test rubbers that are thicker than 4.0 mm. Mostly European players tested Butterfly Tenergy 4.25, 4.50, 4.75, 5.0mm thick, and Double Happiness Hurricane (same thickness as the Tenergy).
The additional rubber thickness contributes to the increase in speed and to better control. Some players commented that already at 4.50mm, you cannot feel the blade and that the use of booster does not make sense as the rubber is already very fast.
After 4.25mm there is not much acceleration when you use more power. The 4.75 and 5.00mm thick rubbers
are worse than 4.25 and 4.50mm -very heavy (the difference of up to 10g per rubber, comparing to the rubbers under 4.0mm thick), no acceleration.

Why would they test rubbers thicker than 4.0mm?

Also this:
Quote:
4. Plastic Balls with Seam Test
Players gave mostly positive comments; still, the difference between plastic balls with seam and without seam is
huge. It is important to make sure that ITTF tournaments are played only with a top quality balls, and to decide in advance which balls (with or without seam) will be used in ITTF tournaments.
So far, the balls with seam have received much better reviews than the balls without seam - better quality, more similar to the celluloid balls.

If I read correct, they say, that the use of booster does not make sense with the thicker rubbers. Maybe they want to allow thicker rubbers in order to get rid of boosting, as the rubbers are faster and would get uncontrolled with boosters applied.

If this is the case, I think this would be a good solution to the booster problem, as anybody can get those rubbers. But maybe I am reading incorrect. We will see what will happen in the future.

Kind Regards

You might be right there. We'll have to wait and see what happens :)
