This is cool. Jim Butler won the U.S. championship three times in the early 90s. He retired for more than a decade. Now 20+ years later, at age 44, he won the U.S. championship in December and today he won the North American championship. This suggests that Butler has to be considered among the top all-time great U.S. players of the sponge era. Up there with Seemiller, Boggan, O'Neill, Zhuang and Dal-Joon. The question is whether he'll be the last great U.S. player (or pretty good player by world standards). He topped out at ITTF #70 in the 90s.

I believe that a couple of years ago (in the last 10 years maybe, prior to Henzell) a player was the Australian Champion 20 years after he last won the title. Any guesses who?

He paid a tribute to his physiotherapist in his victory speech.

I think Robbie Javor won in 1994, quite a while after his previous win in the late 70's/early 80's (can't quite remember). I don't know of any others with large gaps between wins though - although maybe Gary Haberl might have done something similar?

Yes I remember Robby Javor, he played in Adelaide for many years. Don't know what happened to him, he either stopped playing or moved interstate. :(

Two players have won the English nationals with big gaps between first and last (albeit both with some wins in-between).

The great Desmond Douglas won first in 75/76 and last in 89/90 (at age 35)

Alan Cooke did even better, first in 87/88 and last in 04/05 (at age 39)

For Australia, it was Robbie Javor that I was thinking of. I remember seeing the final on free to air TV here. 20 years ago. Time flies.

Gary Haberl came back more recently (< 20 years ago :) )to win NSW Veterans Open O/40 after not having been sighted for however many years. I was there to see him win that one.
