Timo Boll: "The players themselves don't even look at the use of tuning as being wrong because they pass the current tests."

I am not sure why this is news. It is a player saying other players don't think it is wrong because they almost can't get caught. However Boll does have a good reputation and seems to be telling it as it is unfortunately.

Highlights yet again the unenforceable rules that we play the game by. :(

Boll says he and Ovtcharov brought this up quietly with the ITTF two-and-a-half years ago but nothing happened. Since they've gone public, they haven't made any friends at the ITTF, but at least there's a dialog now.

Ovtcharov says the players are skeptical about the commitment of the ITTF "because the equipment suppliers and sponsors of the ITTF are one in the same." He also says the plastic balls aren't the best quality, but they have to use them because of the sponsors.

Yeah, I saw the bit about the pro players not being too happy with the quality of the balls, complaining that sponsorship triumphed over quality.

I would have thought some poor schmuck would have been busy opening boxes and testing balls behind the scenes at the tournaments to ensure ball quality for the pros.

Not sure whether :) or :( or something else is appropriate, oh yeah :cash:

In the old days (1980s?) the players made a show of spinning balls on the table to select the one they were going to use for the game. They don't seem to do it any more. Not sure if it was ever necessary back then, the old 38mm Nittaku and TSP 3 star balls were as good as balls could get.

As an aside - I was surprised to read that, before every major league baseball game, the groundskeeper would open up several boxes of new balls (forget how many per game, but it was in the dozens) and individually smear each one with some sort of packaged mud. The mud was harvested once a year by a company from a certain place on the banks of some river.

Also makes the ball catch the air more making all pitches move more. You aren't allowed to scratch\cut the ball with your nail or cleats. Actually they change balls constantly in mlb so the pitchers rub them down real good with some sweat and dirty hands

Why would top players want to tune/boost rubbers which manufacturers tell us are already optimised for the plastic ball, or the old celluloid ball - doesn't make sense, espeically when the top top players can pick and choose the best quality rubbers in a range ;)

Surely they feel that boosted, tuned rubber is much better than the normal out of packages ones. Or maybe its more to their liking personally.

It's still quite possible that the sponsors make rubbers )for their players) that are made to be tuned. It's well known that some rubbers react to tuners much better than others, so instead of tuning the rubber for the players, they make them so that the players can choose to tune them to suit their needs.

Apparently (according to the article mentioned, or another one, or a video - I've come across several on this subject) pitchers like darker balls, batsmen like whiter ones!
