Budapest, Hungary has been awarded to host the 2019 World Table Tennis Championships as approved by the 2016 ITTF Annual General Meeting (AGM) held today, 1 March 2016, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 55th edition of the world's biggest table tennis event, will be held in the SYMA event hall in the Hungarian capital, a venue that last month was approved by top ITTF official as worthy of hosting the individual championships.

Don't know why they can't ever do it in the USA. We have empty seats too. :^)

Remember Budapest has a great tradition in TT - the worlds were held there in 1929, 1931 and 1950 and for most of the period 1926-1950+ Hungary were the dominant team in TT in the same way that China are now. What's more, Hungary won the Swaythling Cup again in 1979 and until recently have always been a force in the men's game, while the women have never really fallen below the top level.

So 66 years is a bit overdue - and there are a a lot of TT fans in Hungary. But then again, the USA has never hosted the Worlds, and the US has won world titles too, so why not? You'd have thought the ITTF would go all out to encourage the kind of maximum exposure and advertising that the USA could bring to the game (if the nation's interest was aroused by hosting a World championship).

Actually what's needed is for the USTTA to offer to host a worlds...

Hypothetically speaking... IF they were to hold a World Champs in the US - where would they hold it? There are so many places to choose from! I'd guess New York (some real history there). Madison Square Garden??? Probably too expensive. I suppose there's Colorado Springs.. But lots of other places as well - Gaithersburg, Chicago (Cobo Hall anyone? They'd better put down flooring..), San Francisco, maybe even Indianapolis.. or Louisville.. you see the "problem"..

Very nice! Another reason to visit my home country. If you guys haven't been there yet you shouldn't miss out. The 2019 WTTC is not the only good thing there :)
