After sparse crowds all week, a mob was brought in to fill the seats for the ITTF world championship finals.

Quote:
The crowd, comprising mostly staff of the competition's sponsor Perfect, a Chinese company specialising in beauty and skincare products, was unrelenting - just like their teams. At one point, the announcer had to remind them to stay quiet when play was going on.

Boy, you NEVER miss a chance to put negative spin on anything, do you... I suppose it is the season for that... So why is it ITTF who brought in the crowd now?

I can't believe they don't attract a big crowd for such a huge event!... surely people would come if the entry cost was low enough...

The problem is, table tennis isn't a popular sport around here. Nothing like Badminton. I agree, they could have done more - spend a few tens of thousand dollars to put "articles" into the daily papers, for instance (there WERE articles every day once it got started), but they still wouldn't have gotten more than maybe an extra 2-300 people. Pretty much all the regular table tennis players from the regular clubs were already there - mainly as volunteers. Tickets weren't expensive, the cheapest top tier seats were RM10 during the qualifying rounds (about USD2.20), well within schoolkid lunch money range.

Badminton events here WILL pull in huge crowds. So do soccer matches.

I still don't understand why ITTF is being blamed for "bringing in" the "fake crowd", though..

This is common practice in tennis also. Early rounds having lots of empty seats only to have the final few rounds packed as the sponsor gives out tickets to their employees. I think it's good the ittf found a Corp to fill the seats but next time perhaps an email about how to act would be best.

We've been told by the ITTF that all these changes that affect us as recreational players (i.e. multiple ball changes, the banning of rubbers designed for "unattractive styles" that many amateurs play, etc.) were allegedly done for the benefit of ITTF spectators.

So how has that worked out?

Well, now they have to literally GIVE AWAY tickets to non-TT fans to fill the seats for their biggest event.

Yes, I'm aware that "papering the audience" is common practice for failed promotions. This is simply being noted in this special thread that scrutinizes what the ITTF is doing.

We all want our sport to grow and be successful, but many us who monitor the sport closely believe the ITTF has taken us in the wrong direction.

OK so where did all the crowd come from in 2000 at KL?

I see. So it was ITTF who "brought in" the "fake" crowd by "giving away free tickets". Boy, you're stretching so hard you're about to bust a tendon.

As someone who actually lives and works here I'm happy Perfect paid to bring several planeloads of its staff over to watch the games. It was probably only for a couple of nights, but at least that's several hundred hotel room nights that would've otherwise gone empty. I don't know what it cost them, but it must've been a bundle. And that bundle went into the local economy. Those tickets were not "free" - those tickets cost Perfect several hundred dollars apiece. As the main sponsor for the event, this would be part of their sponsorship. Try holding this event in the US - see if you can do any better. Try to get Amway or Herbalife to bus in a bunch of their people to attend, see how far you get.

You seem pretty angry, bitter and dissapointed - maybe it would've made you happy if there'd been no crowd and the event was a washout. What made you this way? Did ITTF do something to you in the past? Ban your favorite rubber, maybe? You sound like Rush Limbaugh talking about President Obama. You actually seem to HATE ITTF, and wish it to fail. When it doesn't, you get bitter about it and accuse it of doing stuff like "bringing in a fake crowd".

I, on the other hand, enjoyed myself last week. It's not every day that you get to see players of this quality in person, to hang around a place where they actually had table tennis stuff on the shelf, where you could talk to fellow enthusiasts, and watch some pretty exciting matches in person. There may not have been as many people like myself as your unrealistic expectations demand, but there were quite a few.

I am curious where they put all those people up, though.. lots of hotels around KL of different quality, I wonder if they had to double up. Some of the lower class hotels are pretty manky..

Since you turn a blind eye to the ITTF's track record of lies, corruption and conflicts of interest, there's no point in trying to discuss this with you. The fact that they had to paper their biggest event is legitimate news. People can make their own decisions about whether it's good or bad.

So I see. If someone doesn't buy 100% into your world view which is that ITTF is the work of Satan, that there's nothing good to be said of it, there's no "discussion" possible. What possible discussion CAN be had, other than everything ITTF does or is involved with must be put into the worst light possible?

You're right, it's a waste of time.

For the rest of us who wish to enjoy the sport, well, we'll continue doing so, doesn't matter what you say.

To inject a fact into this doubtless fascinating discussion, it was not the ITTF that "had to paper their biggest event". It was the Perfect company that apparently brought in its employees as a rent-a-crowd.

That is not to say that world table tennis is not in a parlous state. I just wouldn't land this one at the door of the ITTF.

I don't get the problem with a major sponsor putting the best light on their sponsorship by booking out the final. Good on Perfect for backing table tennis.

To expand on this, sponsorship expenditure is usually or often a big gamble when it comes to return on investment. And most of the time, measuring the ROI on sponsorship or other forms of marketing is sketchy to impossible. So a big commitment deserves plaudits and not brickbats.

I'm beginning to see that I was looking the wrong way at the ITTF's dismal failure in marketing this world table tennis championship. They actually saved the day by getting a sponsor to bring in non-TT fan employees to fill the huge numbers of unsold seats during the finals.

Big win for the ITTF and table tennis!
