Don't fault China for winning at table tennis, says ITTF chief

Thomas Weikert: "China has dominated our sport and of course it is better if you have, let's say, a competition, and it was not (competitive) in the last world championships and the Olympics. But it's not the fault of the Chinese players that they are so good. So my opinion is that the others have to work very hard."

We'll soon find out.

I tend to agree with that... if the competition is more even, it's going to be more fun to watch, and more effort will be put into it by more countries, since they would actually have a chance for medals.
I also agree that it's not the Chinese fault for being so good.. they deserve it since they put in so much effort.
What I would NOT like is the ITTF messing with it, to make it artificially more even.

Notice how they plan to spread the sport in China?
They are promoting it in 5000 schools.
Not starting a simple version with a bigger ball and changing the rules.
ITTF listening?

What, soccer? You'd think you'd want a SMALLER ball for the kids...

This approach is also called "throw money at it". It apparently worked for badminton, diving, gymnastics...

Yep, 'throwing money at it' can work, but it helps if your eyes are open and you look at where you're throwing.

But apparently, so far, not for soccer. The Chinese national team does suck big time. 10 years from now might be a different story...

Not unless they change their training methods. China likes individual sports where practice and methodology can be drilled almost inhumanely (communist style) into one's mind from a very young age. Unfortunately this doesn't work with team spots. You can have the best kick in the world but if you don't work well with a team. You are going to lose.

Ah... That's not what they're doing at the soccer school - they've imported a bunch of Spanish coaches, the kids even speak Spanish and play Spanish-style tiki-taka football. Come to think of it.. their pro league has huge amounts of money and are buying up European talent left and right.

It's not because they can play tiki taka, they can play together.
I agree with leatherback on their training methods.
The only thing other nations can do is to drill their own TT students also inhumanely, something that's probably not going to happen. Or the drilling of the Chinese must be less communist style, which a sports governing body like the ITTF can help to create by making the sport more about creativity/tactics and less about technique/physical endurance. If you have that, the Chinese will need to foster such individual talents. Only problem is those talents will kill the communist style of drilling. This will result in a more equal playing field.

How do you know they're drilling their kids Communist style? And how do you know they can't play together? If they're bringing in Spanish coaches they're probably doing whatever they're doing Spanish style. No idea what Spanish style is, of course, but it seems to work in Spain.

I tend to agree, with ONE exception....I think the Chinese should be forced to have setups either <100g or >500g  :P

This is the scary part. What if they learn to master 500g paddles? *shudder*

I'm quite sure that Japan does know how to drill their talents at least as hard as the Chinese do. And in Germany they'll have special training facilities for talents, also with strict rules and targets etc.
In the Netherlands there are some special sport-schools where talents can combine their educational development with their sport, but it's less of a drill than in Germany, imho.

But, all efforts are mostly useless as long as the amount of interested talents is low. I don't see it changing as long as table-tennis is seen as a minor sport, suitable for people who are too weak for serious sports like football and who are too stupid for things like chess etc.
Table-tennis has to be shown in schools even if it's just for a few sessions each year. Newspapers should be encouraged to report from local club competitions on a regular basis and trainers etc. shouldn't tell the kids that they'd need expensive rubbers and so on when a sub $20 racket for the first few years is suitable as well. Beeing a talent shouldn't come with a pricetag at all, if kids do show skills the equipment should be free of charge for at least as long as they're juniors or students.
Once table-tennis outside of Asia gets to a level similar to tennis or cycling, the talents are more likely to show up in significant numbers
