It is fantasy. Though it is medievalish, there are flying dragons, witches, and zombie things. Not as fantastical as Lord of the Rings, but not quite Chaucer either.

Game of Thrones is set in a fictional medieval/fantasy realm. It's quite dark and gritty (like a lot of HBO's drama series'). The show has a lot of characters, which can take some time getting your head around, but the writers/producers have done a fine job of minimising the confusion. Keep in mind that in the US it is rated 'R', and it's certainly very adult because of some of the violence and sex/nudity scenes. Once you get used to that you'll find a show that is written well, photographed beautifully and filled with strange and wonderful characters. There are twists aplenty, too. The show might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly appeals to the likes of me.
