Sorry to hear that Oskar!

How did it happen? Did lightening strike your power lines, or phone line, or something else?

Lightening through telephone line connected to my ADSL modem which is hard-wired into my desktop computer. Boom! A kind of reverse Xmas present. As Reborn suggests, I could have maybe saved it if I 'surge protected' the telephone socket, because the electrical connection wasn't affected. Usually I pull the whole phone connection out when a storm is brewing, but this time I was away from home and unable to do so. When I spoke to my ISP about replacing the modem he said many people had experienced the same thing.

So, the new strategy - which I'm putting into place today - is to go for a wireless N modem. And I'll make sure to pull the phone plug out when I'm not home and there's even a remote chance of storms.

Thanks Oskar!

I had actually assume that your power lines got hit, so next time I was at the hardware store I was reminded of this, I bought some surge protected power boards. :( Never mind, the chances of it happening to me are almost NIL anyways, right Oskar? 8)

Another year! Shall we do another New Year countdown? :)
I am from the West coast of Canada, so I will post quite late. Let's do a wave around the world! I wonder who in the forum will see 2013 first. :)

Oskar I once had a uptime competition with a guy I knew on the net to see how long we could stay online without dropping out, this was back in the dial up modem days. About two weeks in he was talking about a storm on the way and that he was going to ride it out. He did have a UPS power supply but even so he did drop off line.. I found out a few days later when he returned that a lighting bolt had landed on his lawn somewhere and fried his modem and laptop :p. Gota watch those storms

I've actually lost a couple of adsl modems in the last few years because of a fault in the local transformer that was occasional dumping 500 volts down the line.. I knew it wasn't just me when I went to the post office and there were about 50 parcels with new modems in them from the telstra customers waiting on the shelf to be delivered. Powercore then sent out a letter for everyone to list broken stuff so they could get money to replace electronics, lucky I only lost a modem, lots of people lost TV's and worse. Then it happened again a few weeks later and once more before they found the fault..

OK. Another year has rushed by. Let's welcome 2014!
Should we continue with this thread or start a new one for the "count down wave"? :o:

Let's start a new one... not sure if I should start one now, or start one at midnight... as at that time our NZ friends have already started the party.

OK guys, shall we do that "wave" around the world for New Year again?
Start with the Samoan or New Zealand TT gangs first and end with the Hawaiian ones?
