I used to be an awesome overclocker back in the late 90s. These days I use secondhand ex government PCs that I buy for like $50 Lol. I upgrade them about once every five years, run big heat sinks, under clock them and turn every fan off which they will run without :p. Funny how things change. Slow and cheap in the end wins out in both table tennis and pcs . How often do I clean them? They get automatically cleaned when they get replaced :D.

I went through overclocking (loud with a Coolermaster Copper HCC-001) and water cooling phase too when in my 20's, using aquarium water pumps and 12x12 copper/aluminium heat exchangers, all ghetto style. Nowadays I only run 3 120 low noise vents on my computer, and they even are auto-controlled by the PSU. CPU is a low power 45W AMD, so even the cooler runs fan-less. Main sound issue is the graphics card, changed from a nVidia 8800GT fan-less to an AMD 6870HD with fan, hope I can find a mid range fanless option soon.

Dust is not that big of a problem anyway if you clean it at least one time a year, and my fans don't spin that fast, so they don't attract too much dust.

Above 65% W/L ratio this season, YAY!

I run a gaming rig that can sound like it trying to reach orbit on some high end games.

Still there are good cooling options that are fairly quiet. I don't use water cooling as I find that the CPU only needs water cooling if its being overclocked, I dont overclock and even at ~50 degrees C its fine. I use an air compressor to clean out my case every 2-4 months as its needed but as I have a fairly well set up air flow there is little settling of dust on the inside of the case.

even if you are not over clocking . when your CPU gets hot it will start to bottleneck/lag. water is the best way to keep it constatly cool. or else a jet engine of a fan

Very true and I agree that liquid cooling is much more efficient, but with my bench-marking tests the CPU doesn't get above ~55 degrees C when gaming and from what I understand that's well within normal load temps and the bottle necking shouldn't happen until I push above 65C. So as long as I can keep the ambient room temp fairly cool in the summer here, I am ok to game away. I will say thought that case mounted fan controllers are great for keeping noise down.

yeah fan controllers are handy.

still though having your cpu run at around 28c on idle and 34-38 under a load jsut makes things that much better :P
