Are private messages private?
Yes it should remain strictly between the 2 parties 91%  91%  [ 20 ]
Depends on the content, the recipient can decide 9%  9%  [ 2 ]
It's a public forum, even PMs are public 0%  0%  [ 0 ]

Yes I agree pretty much with what's been said here too, assuming that it would remain private... and I'm pleased to see we all pretty much agree :wink: I also agree it's easy to forget sometimes...

I guess to be on the safe side, tell people if the information is confidential... or as Greg suggested, ask them first if they're happy to receive info that you don't want to disclose publicly...

Maybe the admin can view all PMs and laugh at any problems we are discussing with someone else. :lol:

Seriously though, do admins have the power to see PM content? (That was aimed at haggis.)

It would be unethical to operate that way for sure, but admins usually do have the power in a windows environment to see emails for all users in the domain. But this is in a work environment where there are policies to be met by people using the email system. A bit different to a chat forum. So I would hope the software design is somewhat different to windows (which I'm sure it is). Haggisv, I am sure, would not snoop even if he could. I am not certain that would hold for all admins on forums (speedplay also excluded too).

The PHPBB software does not allow admins to look at other people's PMs, and even if there was a way, I would not do it as I agree it would be unethical.

That was certainly not the intention, and I realise you didn't say that it was, but I can see how it may seem that way.
I started this poll because I was chatting with a few members here recently (you know who you are) about some of my own PMs in another forum being made public, which I did not feel appropriate as the content was obviously private... So I wanted to see whether others would think PMs should be made public despite their content...

he couldn't if the program encodes the data. depends on how sophisticated it is. Or it may leave the text plain and just encode the user ids, although this would be the weaker way to do it. I don't think Haggis is going to go to the trouble of doing a sql query for this anyway, even if he knows how, LOL.

It probably does encode it, but I'm really not sure. Posts aren't encoded.


Anyway it's easy to get onto - just install phpMyAdmin :P
