I played golf for the first time, yesterday. Obviously I was hopeless, but I enjoyed myself enough to decide to play some more.

I know pgpg plays... anyone else? Any hints for a complete beginner, apart from DO NOT DO GOLF EJ! ?

I played for about 15 years, got down to 9. Swing smooth, keep your eye on the ball and swing at 80% ie don't try smash it.

'Plays' would be a bit of a stretch - I used to until a couple of years ago, but then I changed jobs and got more serious about TT. Even then I was not good - my best score ever was 41 on a relatively easy 9-hole course, so relatively speaking I am much better at TT :)

It's a great game, though - much more mental than TT. You only have yourself to blame for a crappy shot (and you will, oh yes). Every shot counts and they are so different. Quite a bit more social, in my experience, drinks after you are done playing is more or less a standard. Not a lot of equipment/style variety, to be honest, don't know what an equivalent of LP would be in golf.

As far as hints: get some skill-appropriate equipment (last year models will save you decent cash), get lessons (duh!), spend time on the driving range AND practice green to chip and putt (everyone likes hitting drives, not many practice short game). Early on you might be better off with taking only 4-5 clubs to the course: 3-wood, 5-iron, PW/SW and a putter. Makes it easier to pick a club for your next shot and your bag is much lighter ;)
