Two major problems with batteries are longevity and safety. If you've had to deal with Li-Ion or Li-polymer batteries for hobby use, you'll see that airlines have put major restrictions on travelling with the things, and shipping quantities of them. And if you own a cell phone you'll know the things don't last all that long. They can be recycled to recover the lithium, which that first video above ignores.

Lithium batteries are just the beginning, I think - eventually they'll extend the technology to sodium and potassium batteries. While these will be a great deal heavier, they have the potential to store even more energy per given volume and these metals are ubiquitous, no need to mine them. But one wonders how safe they'd be.

I don't have an electric car, but a number of electric bicycles, that I ride to work and for fun on the weekends. Acceleration is surprising - on one of the bikes, I have to lean forward, and turn the throttle very slowly, otherwise the bike will wheelie and put me on my tailbone!

I had a laugh picturing that....and then I I felt sorry for your pain

and.... when it happens at a major set of traffic lights, with a whole lot of people in cars watching, the pain is mixed with a fair dose of embarrassment! I wasn't watching the lights, looked up and realized that the lights had turned green, and grabbed too much throttle - the bike landed in the middle of the interchange, with me sitting about 5m away! :)

Oh stop it! Now I'm starting to forget your pain and just laugh more..... :P

Reminds me of those Calvin vs. The Bike comics... Supposedly these things have taken over the sidewalks in China - everyone's buying stuff online so someone's got to deliver it all, and that someone usually rides one of these things. Apparently the Chinese government (belatedly) put limits on how much power these things are allowed, but it's regularly ignored.

that's funny - I didn't know Calvin's bicycle attacked him as well! I sympathize...
I far prefer taking an electric bike rather than a car, only use the car when I need to - great sense of freedom and, if the bike is set up well to assist with pedaling, you just feel super human...

Just a bike helmet, Reb (otherwise it might look like I was riding a motorbike :) ) - and my butt is probably padded enough already!

I was reading something the other day that GoBike has invaded melbourne and people are pissed off at bikes lying around everywhere.

And this came out a few days ago:

Apparently dockless bikes are coming to certain locations in the US but have run into obstacles in some places. They've just been introduced on campus here, and the students will be back next week. All nicely lined up at several locations on the sidewalk, but one wonders how long that's going to last... I saw one maybe five miles from campus, one wonders how far away people are allowed to take them.
