It’s all the before mentioned reasons & more. Hand eye co-ordination, balance, tactics & possible playing longevity. The club I play for has a player that will turn 90 this year he’s remarkable.
When my wife was recovering from brain injury after a car accident her rehab clinic taught her to play our wonderful game which greatly helped that recovery.
Playing the game is so good for your physical & mental wellbeing. :*:   8)

I play because it has elements of combat - much like fencing or dueling with light sabers or martial arts sparing or even a wizards duel.

You have many varied weapons at your disposal, the opponent may not even know what they are, you have to chose which weapon of yours you release against whatever attack the opponent throws at you.

You have a paddle which has chosen you as much as you have chosen it. The contest requires speed, timing and reaction to ever changing thrusts and parries.

I also love it because it is always different, you never play the same game or even point twice.

I enjoy the challenge of trying to control that little white piece of plastic and occasionally smacking the crap out of it.
