Does anyone know of software to make charts like the one below? Excel can plot the points, but I don't think it can put a name to each point.

Actually, you can create Scatter charts with labeled points in Excel. You can even use custom images for the markers.

Thanks GMan4911

I've got three columns of data though, being: Name, speed, control

I want to plot speed vs control, and each point labelled with the name.

I can't see how excel can do this, but perhaps it can?

There's an add-in for Excel called XY Chart Labeler. I've used it, it works pretty well.

I have grown to deeply resent the attempts MS Office applications do towards reading my mind. I prefer to have the options available for myself to adjust. This is one important reason why I frequently use OpenOffice/LibreOffice instead. (My employer dictates MS Office as the Office tool of choice, so whenever collaboration/sharing is part of the process, I have to use that.)

In OpenOffice Calc I can make something like the requested chart within minutes, without any plugins installed or other technicalities. The same settings are probably available in Excel too, but buried deep below the wizardry of Excel-ence.

That Excel addon probably does the job. If not, you can send me your data and I'll return my suggestion. Am at my day job right now, so I can't promise that I have the time available immediately. Give it an hour or two.

R or Python are much better for interactive data analysis and plotting/visualization.

Tutorial for Excel 2013+

The first one makes use of a macro, kinda involved. If you have an earlier version of Excel get the XY Chart Labeler:

https://xy-chart-labeler.software.informer.com/7.1/

If you have Excel 2013+ the second tutorial shows a very easy way to add and manipulate data labels. You can even move them around and they'll have a little line that connects the data point to the label. Actually it might be worth checking to see if it isn't in the earlier versions, too.

I'm a big user/believer of/in Excel (and spreadsheets in general - I started with Lotus 123) - it's great for manipulating and displaying data without a bunch of programming. I tried briefly one of the open source spreadsheets (back when Sun was trying to get people to use their PC based SunOS) but it made a huge mess of the spreadsheets I already had. (Not to mention SunOS didn't have USB drive support, which was really embarrassing for the demonstrators..)

Does anyone know of any other software that creates visual charts like this? Excell is great for manipulating data, but not the most flexible in displaying data IMO.

I've seen tons of 'info-graphics' or 'info-charts', like visme.co, but they tend to be most visual and not big on displaying things like scatter graphs with labels that I'm after.

If you're talking about charts exactly like the one you put in the first post, Excel will do those just nice. Yeah, there may be other charting software that makes some types of graphs better than Excel but I already know Excel pretty well and haven't found a need for them myself.

I would also like to vote for R. It's free, and there are a lot of resources online to learn it. I would say that there is a learning curve, however.
