Sounds like perfect advice to me!
I tend to chop-block them, which is where a little grip on the pimples (especially softer ones) can produce quite good backspin. Brushing sideways (accross) can produce some very nasty balls too.

What if the opponent hits a medium speed drive? If we passive block it with the pips, it's fairly easy to kill if it's over the table. How do we handle this type of shot? |

You mean a drive with minimal spin that's not too fast, but fast enough to where you can't really set up your own shot? Passive blocking those shots, for me at least, will normally just give them a slow, short ball to kill, but a chop block with a little bit of "oomph" on it to go deep will force them to either push or get back into looping mode. |

For the most part, passive blocking just doesn't produce a quality return with the long pips rubbers that are currently legal today. This is especially true when returning balls that do not have much spin, such as a medium speed topspin drive. Executing a block against this type of return is still an option but you need to use an active block such as a backspin block (chop-block), side-spin block, or even a topspin block. Just try to play the ball very early in the bounce, using your wrist not your forearm, and "peel" your racket around the ball either downward, around the side, or over the top (like dealing cards). Depending on the pips and blade, and if they gave it good topspin, if you have lots of reversal, you can make what looks to be a topspin counter drive, and if you do it quickly to someplace hard to get to, they screw up the return because they don't notice its underspin till after it goes into the net. |

Ask Tatlwai and he'll tell you to attack with your OX, it isn't such a mission impossible as you would think. Unless I loaded the ball, Tat could attack my safe, not so spinny topspin connecting shots if I put it to his OX BH wing. Even if you do not make a counter-attack with the OX LP, even just making a no-spin return with the same pace (impacting it early or at net height to get a little more safe pace) medium spin fast enough to rob time and slow enough to land and hopefully well placed enough that opponent either cannot continue the attack or will likely miss badly if he tries to keep attacking. Korean ladies who use OX practice this shot a LOT, usually it is vs a medium no-spin, but they are pretty good at bumping back with some pace and location (the Div 1 and Div 2 Achuma crowd is). The lower level OX crowd who just holds it out there, kinda like former user-name block n hope... is pretty much hoping opponent will miss next shot. |
