When I just try to block a loop with LPs I try and take the ball as early as possible with the blade face virtually vertical. When I chop-block I tend to take the ball a little later, and open the blade face a little past vertical and chop down.

Is that how you guys do it as well?

In general yes, then you can push the ball down on the chop block. Sometimes when it's clear where the ball will bounce I start the chop block early and hit the ball right after the bounce. This is a great shot to play but not easy to do.

That's what I do also. I've been trying to emulate that guy on the LSD video with a very large forearm movement. How tight is your grip on this shot?

My grip is usually quite tight... not by choice though

Yeah, the chop block is usually executed under a fair amount of pressure and so your grip tends to be tensed up. Sometimes I will consciously try to relax my grip just as I contact the ball as I think it generally results in a better shot. I'll force myself into this more if I have sent some recent chop-blocks off the table. Not always easy though and comes down to all sorts of factors going on in the heat of the moment as to whether its even possible to relax it.

Every block with pimples close to the table should be as early as possible. It is difficult to control the ball when it is already rising or worse at it's highest point.
Vertical angle to the table is good, but it always depends on the spin on the ball. If your opponent plays more spin you should close the racket a little bit. And vice versa with less spin you should open the racket a little.

Important for the chop block is a fast movement downwoards. Some players that I teach tend to play the movement more forward and then the ball goes over the table.

Very interesting topic!

I keep telling myself that in order to get a good block in, I need to take the ball off the bounce and in the middle of the blade.

Out of interest, how do people on here take hard fast shots close to the table? The same as above or do you use a different technique?

For the hard and fast ones I just try to get my bat to it, usually with a open face (vertical) and there's really no time for much chop-block movement.

Specially for those topspins / smashes you have to make a little downwards movement, otherwise you cannot control the ball. Of course it is quite difficult but from my experience I can tell that you need to perform the stroke in a downward/sideward direction for a better control.

my coach tells me, with chop-blocking, I shall be able to 'creative' one of the following returns:
(1) regular underspin (same as blocking)
(2) flaky underspin (similar to Ma Lin serve)
(3) 'wobble' (Float ball)
(4) topspin

adjusting your chop-blocking action will do ;)

Hi Fab

Do you do much chop blocking with your Curl P4?
