Hi all

first of all a general question for forum administrators.

Where should I post a topic like this?
People seem to post these sorts of questions under equipment: LP, but this deals with technique and not equipment.
It should be under this category (Table Tennis Techniques, Strategies & Coaching) but it has a list of subcategories, none of which fit...so I am just putting it under LP pushing/blocking.

Now, on to my actual question.

I have recently been working a lot on twiddling and returning serves on my FH side with LP - utilising a side swipe motion.

My observation is that this works really well for short serves. I am able to generally keep the returns low and deep, and sometimes fast. This causes problems to most opponents, and even the top players at my club have trouble doing much with the third ball.

My problem is when they get wise to my tactic and mix in some fast long serves to my FH when they see me twiddling. I find with the LP I tend to pop up my returns. Is there a good way to return fast serves to the FH with LP that makes the third ball as uncomfortable as possible for the server? I guess, just stepping back and chopping would be the normal response, but this is fairly orthodox and not that tricky. Is there some version of the sideswipe return for fast serves? And what is the technique involved?

Thanks
PK

My blade is so slow I'm not having any special trouble, although I'm new to long pips (388D-1 OX): I just angle the blade right and brush in any direction that I want to.

You could try watching some Zhou Xintong videos and just do what she does. Does this help?

Edit: Oh, now I see you're a very strong player. Sorry for the beginner's advice! :-)

Thanks for the tip Zhaoyang and thanks for introducing me to Zhou Xintong!
I will definitely watch her videos when I have a chance, although it's sometimes hard to translate penhold technique for shakehand.

Because I only twiddle on occasion, it's rare having to handle a fast balls to the pips on the FH. But when it does happen, I do tend to take a step back and chop it, and because they're not used to getting a deep float from the FH, it can still results in a weak return.
I'm sure a block or chop-block would be possible, just like it is on the backhand, but I find this much harder to do on the forehand.
