Though I've been playing with LPs for about 6 years now, I still have learning to do.

One thing I've recently recognized, thanks to my penhold, looper coach, (!), is to lightly brush balls with the pips as opposed to trying to force them to do something. IOW, don't hit the ball hard with a tight grip, but rather lightly, with a side swipe motion, allow the pips to do the work (I'm talking hitting underspin balls which return as topspin or dead balls).

I had the habit or idea of hitting the ball quickly, in order not to be a sitting duck on the return. Of course, sometimes this works. However, I miss many light underspin or deadish balls this way.

But using a sideswipe motion you also keep the opponent guessing as to where the ball is coming. You can go crosscourt to their backhand, which is often what they expect, or you can turn last second and take the ball down the line.

If you have a mildly fast paddle, you should be able to get plenty of pace on the ball without trying to hit the ball hard or with a tight grip.

Greg Letts has a great video where he describes the things that lower rated players try to do with long pips which he can hardly do despite being one of the best pips players in Australia. The point was to not use pips for things they are not good at like playing fast loop like shots.
