Messing around with family on a junk penhold paddle. The set-up is a clipper clone with dr. evil ox on FH and some friendship short pips on BH which I barely used. I haven't played PH in almost a year but since I'm blocking SH when I switched back to PH I started naturally gravitating to blocking PH. Once I got used to dr. evil I thought it was a decent set up and effective. My pushes were better than in SH and my blocks landed on the table with the occasional RPB loop or smash being devastating.

I'm wondering if I would have a lot more trouble playing against higher levels with a push block pen hold setup?

The no crossover point was beautiful compared with SH.

Any thoughts?

If well executes, PH push can be very deadly. And PH BH comes in a range of techniques - push, sliding and push with a slight backward motion.

The God in traditional PH techniques is Ma Lin. He's less powerful and shorter than many players in his era. Yet with his smart use of traditional PH techniques, he simply created chaos for his opponents.

So in short, PH push can be a deadly weapon. You can play well against high level players for sure.

Interesting. Penhold hardbat. I wonder if any full-time hardbat player in the US plays penhold. They did exist back in the day - I expect the 1952 Japanese team at the WC mostly played penhold, Satoh was the only one using sponge.

My backhand had sponge so it was a pretty standard RPB. I twiddled a little on serves until I realized Dr. Evil was good enough for serves. It was just so easy to cover the whole table for pushing without needing a big adjustment on the next ball.
