It is a bit like pushblocker philosophy, from what I have read over in the pushblocking subtopic, or maybe common among the various defensive strategies. It is sometimes called winning ugly. If continual pushing, for example, is the way to win points, games and ultimately matches against a particular opponent, then a retriever may happen on this tactic and not be too proud to use it to win. |

Is a retriever's philosophy to "get the ball back" or to "get the ball back in awkward ways for the opponent"? Consistency or deception? |

A retriever consistently gets the ball back with deception  Well with differences - chop with a little backspin, chop with a lot of backspin, chop that floats, all with very similar actions. As I have said before, it's not the amount of spin on the ball, it's the amount of spin the opponent thinks is on the ball. |
