Hi!

I was told by a pretty good player last night that my right elbow should stay slightly in front of my body during my forehand and that I am allowing it to be pulled behind me. He stated that this makes the timing of the stroke difficult and that a shorter backswing is a bit more of what modern teachers are instructing now. He takes a lot of lessons at Paddle Palace with his Chinese coach, so I was just checkin in on your thoughts on this. I do appreciate it!

Thanks so much! But then on his Whip forehand video, he has the elbow way behind the body.

I agree. Perhaps, the whip forehand is suitable for bigger shots while the golden point rule may be applied to most other shots, including FH drives.

BTW, Brett is a member of this forum. You can ask him directly and disregard my interpretation. :)

That video covers the basic strokes. The elbow position isn't necessarily the same for ALL strokes. I think the point he was making in the video was that for basic strokes, it's best to keep the elbow still, and just use the forearm to execute the stroke. For loops, you obviously wouldn't just use the forearm, so the elbow won't stay in the same place.
