My serves really do let me down in my game, although i had a pretty good knowledge on serves.

My tomahawk serve is totally random :*:
Which i rely on the side spin to do most of the damage.

I want to know how to produce a side top or a side back spin serve. Consistently!

Any pointers is appreciated.

Oops, slipped my mind :headbang: |-)
I'm not sure when I see him, but I can always send an email. Sorry to keep you waiting

EDIT

asked him. He said that at the last moment you should pull your racquet a bit upwards not to the side. It took him quite a while to master it. Don't expect tons of topspin though, it's more like a variation on the side spin one.

for topspin/sidespin brush the top righthand side of the ball, for underspin /sidespin brush thebottom/right of the ball, brush the equator for pure sidespin, you should angle your bat like this\ for topspin, like this/ for back spin(for a righthander)

The ball can be contacted on the upwards part of the bats arc or the down part of the arc also. There is a very high level girl (pro tour ) that uses this serve almost exclusivily in China. She uses an "outside tomahawk" most but can switch between inside or outside with no warning. :)

Its a serve that you should get low with ie bend your knees lol, I find if I do a good one and it comes back fast ,Im still getting back up hahaha. William H does a shorter hook type one from the middle of the table short to the opposition forehand. then backs himself both sides

FH tomahawk and BH tomahawk are my primary serves =]
1) choose where to stand:
stand in the middle of the table if you want to get complete range of placing the ball
or standing in the most left corner (if you are right handed) if you want to surprise with the BH tomahawk
after you choose where to stand, stick with it, if you always stand in the middle and then switch to the corner then the
oppornent will know that most likely you will do BH tomahwak)
2) grip
i'm holing the raquet little bit different. hold the raquet with a normal grip so that the top of your raquet will point to the
sky and your index finger and the raquet edges will point forward
then take the top of your bat and turn it little bit to the left. its takes time to get used to it but for me its almost
double the spin.
(i hope you understand what i was trying to write.. my english is not so good XD)
3) choose the spin
backspin: brush the ball at the lower right side of it, you must open your wrist at contact in order to contact the
the ball at the right place
sidespin: brush the ball at the right side with straight wrist (not so complicated =] )
topspin: brush the ball at the top right side with closed wrist.. i rarely use it since i found that its very easy
to attack it
NOTES:
* all those serves got some sidespin on them.
* you dont move your arm, ONLY wrist.. if you want a deep long serve you should move
the arm slightly forward.
* you dont snap the wrist to contact the ball, you should make a curve motion with the wrist (right to left).
4) surprise effect
vary the spin!!!! from heavy ____ to very light ____
vary the placement!!!!! very short serves to curving long deep serves
these type of serves are not so hard for the reciver, but with the right spin and placement you will
get easy balls to deal with. the oppornent will never know how much the ball is gonna curve on the table.
after you master the 3 spins, try to do the wrist action at the last sec.. holding the bat like you are gonna do
a normal sidespin then at the last moment brush at the lower right to give it some backspin...
also the later the wrist action the faster it is... the faster it is the more spin you get

5) extras
* try to learn the BH tomahawk.. it is just G-R-E-A-T.. (i cant explain in words how to do it.. and i learn it by myself
so i cant give you tips about it but try to do it.. believe me its a great advantage).
* if you are LP player (like me), when you throw the ball in the air, make a fast twiddle and loose grip
so the raquet will spin at your hand, catch it 1 second before you should hit the ball and then hit =]
i know it sounds crazy and "no-way you can do it!" but after 2 monthes of practicing only this.. its possible!!
try to catch it with the LP and then do a massive movement, the oppornent will think you gave the ball heavy spin
but you didnt since its LP.

i hope it helps you =]
if you have some more questions i will be glad to answer!

EDIT:
this is how to surprise with the BH tomahawk, standing in the most right corner (left handed)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43slTzNWkM8
also look at some kenta matsudaira videos, i saw alot of his matches, best way to learn strategies with the tomahawk serve

This is perfect, very detailed and explained well. Thank you!
I understand about the grip change as I normally do this in tennis, and will work on the wrist snaps before contact.

I will try this and i bet it has already improved.

Thanks again.
