At the last veterans event in Darwin I was interested to observe the popularity of the tomahawk serve.

The tomahawk has always been my most deadliest serve. It's the one I pull out when I absolutely have to win a point, or if I want to demoralise my opponent. However, in Canberra, it is a relative rarity.

In Darwin, I saw all sorts of interesting variations of the tomahawk serves, used in different ways. That got me thinking that perhaps it was a serve that particularly appealed to Veterans. I don't think I've seen many young juniors employ it much. They almost always use the pendulum. I assume it is because it is a particularly tricky serve and veterans are tricky players!!! ;)

Have others noticed this too? Are there other serves that tend to be used more/less by different age groups you think?

The Japanese player kenta does tomahawks. Henzell and Ovcharov do quasi-tomahawks. I think there are a few top female players who do them.
