| Post subject: | Corkscrew serves |
Hey guys! Once I get back to the table, I'd like to get a corkscrew serve going, but I'm sort of at a loss as to hhow to do one. I've tried doing a pendulum and contacting the bottom of the ball, swinging to the side, but I have a hard time making it an actual serve. How do you all do corkscrew? Feel free to discuss it, even beyond telling me how to do it.

A corkscrew serve is one that travels in the direction of the axis of rotation. The bat will strike the ball traveling 90 degrees to the direction of travel. Forward motion is achived by tilting the bat slightly down. Note: If the reciever contacts the ball directly in line with the direction of travel, (on the axis of spin) it will act as a no spin ball. If he contacts it on one side, it will appear to have topspin. If contact is on the other side, chop. By doing one serve to one corner of the table, next serve to the other corner, it will confuse many people. Same serve with top and then chop.

As far as I know, corkscrew spin is where the ball is spinning on an axis that is close to the direction the ball is traveling. So to do a serve with corkscrew spin, one way would be sort of a pendulum serve with the bat held almost horizontally, with the end of the bat towards the net. This I sometimes do, but it is not very short. However the ball does move off its line when it hits the table if there is enough spin, the ball is relatively new and the table not totally slick. This will be either nospin or slightly underspin in the vertical axis. Another way would be to toss the ball high and brush the ball at the side from above. This too will be corkscrew, but with either nospin or slight topspin in terms of the vertical axis. This I have not done "seriously". The problem with "pure" corkscrew spin is that there is nothing in the shot to make the ball move in a useful direction, that is towards the net, hence my comments about the presence of spin in the vertical axis, at least initially. |

I guess I could have defined "corkscrew spin". Sorry  Anyway, thanks for the videos! I'll try some of that stuff. |

I am using these serves about 70% of the time now. I got them from copying Liu Shiwen and other Chinese women who use them a lot. I find it is possible to get huge variation in spin and location with them, and they are pretty easy to learn. So basically I have a whole series of them. I use this because I don't have a lot of confidence in my reverse pendulum, and I found that I could accomplish the same thing with these and also not find myself fumbling with my grip after the serve. |

I've never actually heard that term before. I call it a "hook serve" but that is probably not a good term either. |

I do a corkscrew serve just with a regular pendulum serve... instead of brushing the side of the ball, I brush the ball underneath and toward me, with a slight motion towards the table to get it over the net. It results in a short and very wide ball that kicks sideways. Not everyone has trouble with it though. |

To everyone who doesn't understand the corkscrew aspect...it's spinning like an electric drill. If you are using a corkscrew, the corkscrew has "corkscrew spin" toward the cork. An I might try that too, haggis! |
