Details of the OOAK Awards 2010 can be read here

Calling for nominations for:

1. Player of the year 2010 (male)

- Greatest male player of 2010, judging by performance, courage, sportsmenship, etc

Please post your nominations here.

How is this run?
We will have a number of categories for the awards. For each category we will start a new thread asking for nominations for one week. At the end of the week, we will start a poll where members vote for their top 3 choices. Polls are closed after a week, and the winner is announced.

What's the award for the winners?
I will (any help would be much appreciated!) create an "OOAK Hall of Fame" page, where winners and the runner-up will be listed. Every year the new winners will be added.

Nominations so far:
Evgueni Chtchetinine
Ma Long
Ma Lin
Timo Boll
Joo Se Hyuk
Zhang Jike
Jung, Young Sik

If we're voting on their accomplishments for 2010, shouldn't we wait until nearer to the end of the year? There are still a few big tournaments left including the ITTF 2010 Pro Tour Grand Finals on Dec. 16-19.

Regardless of any results from the rest of the year, based on the combined criteria of performance, courage and sportsmenship, I'd have to go with Evgueni Chtchetinine.

Performance: To be rated in the top 75 in the world is spectacular performance for a classical chopper.

Courage: Being the only top player having the courage to play this style sets Chtchetinine apart.

Sportsmenship: Chtchetinine very well may be the only player in the Top 100 NOT tuning.

Based on performance alone, either Timo Boll or Ma Long pending results in the 2010 Tour Finals.

You have a good point. However in the fear on never getting this vote off the ground (as we've been planning this for over a year! ), I propose we simply base it on the last year (going back to Oct 09), and we can syncronise it to a calender year next year.

Ma Lin would be one of my favourites, with solid performances allround.

Ma Lin based on performance at World Teams and his now decade long excellence.

I must admit I don't see enough TT on TV or see enough results from pro tournaments to judge this well. But what I have seen I have to agree with Speedplay that Timo Boll has done very well. Perhaps there is a way we could keep a summary of tournament wins here or something to help judge it? It would need someone to manage it though, would need a keen follower of tournaments results I think. MNNB?? maybe.

I gotta give it to Ma Lin or Joo Se Hyuk. Sure they aren't number one, but to stay in top 10 with such visually riveting styles of play brings excitement to the game. They win points in my book for exciting "performance" and "courage" to be different.

Player of Year #1 candidate - Zhang Jike *Why?* He came out of seemingly nowhere to top 5.
Player of Year #2 candidate - Jung, Young Sik *** former Top ranked U18 player hitting the ITTF like a ton of bricks. Moved to #35 from well over 100 in the last year.

Besides, I get to run into his father just about every month I am at a tourney in the Seoul/Uijeongbu area.

Joo, S K... LOVE his game and he is easily the most exciting and dynamic player on tour, but he is more like a career achievement nominee than a player of the year. I'd give it to him if he could crack the top 5 ITTF rank.

For some reason that was my first thought aswell. I can't say why, but he was just so steady this year. And he defended his Chinese title this year, which is also very hard to accomplish.

Dude flattened the Chinese competition like a typhoon. Hit the rest of the tour like a tornado. You just don't don't go from being on the bubble of a spot on the China national team, blink ur eyes, then all of a sudden be the one dictating terms.

Dude simply kicked tail and took down names... a whole pile of 'em.

Sounds like we'll only have a few choices for the votes...
