I can appreciate the 'engine room' work of people like haggisv and I have no problems with non-members seeing ads. I do think, however, that dedicated members should be free of too much distraction. I've joined a few other forums in my time, but I have a real problem with sites with large banners and random advertising, especially animated ones with garish colours. It seems there are only a few forums that don't do this - OOAK is one of them. Thank the gods (and the administrators, of course) for this!

If the time vs money equation ever becomes a real issue, I think general advertising would have to be not only appropriate but also unobtrusive. I'm sure you can google a few forums to see what I mean. For example, a science fiction forum I joined for a while looks like this: http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/

I suppose I was just suggesting that if for a good reason we all had to see advertising it should be relevant and unobtrusive. I would just hate to see this forum compromised if it was costing too much time and money to support.
