Due to a massive SPAM wave (some of you may have noticed! ), I've temporarily disable new registrations.

Spammers were from a wide variety of IP addresses, Email addresses and locations and with random usernames... there was no common link, which makes it hard to stop via software.

Hopefully this wave will pass quickly, and I'll work on a new countermeasure.

I really hate these spammers

I'm sure you read on mytt the solutions to limit the problem haggis.

Custom question and answer is the leading way to stop it.

Banning the range of IP addresses works well too.

On Noppentest this was successfully solved by asking sense questions:

Addidas
Nike
Puma
Juic
Rebook

Which of these brands sell TT-equipment ?

Bots cannot solve this (=> Addidas, Juic)

Should put these guys in brown fur coats and turn them loose in the deer woods in hunting season.

THanks j-bo. Yes this is the system that's already in place, and has been working very well for years. However the people registering here would have been humans not bots, because the managed to answer the custom questions. It seems to be resolved now though.

Are you using the latest version of phpBB haggis?

The best anti-spam I've seen is where you have to drag shapes into the right containers. Obviously bots can't do that, but all (most) humans can.

Not quite the latest but a very recent one, and none of the security features have changed.


Yes that would be very effective... although the Q&A one is very effective too, enough to stop all bots as you need to design it so that computers can't answer it. However if the spammers get a human to answer the question, and then this human passes it on to a spammer network, it can quickly get out of hand. This is where the shape one that you mentioned is better, as the answer is different every time.

That's very true. However, if you make it TT specific, MOST will not go to the trouble if they don't know the answer off the top of their head to go to google, etc. to find the answer.

You will have some though, and when you start getting spam again, just change the question!

I've only had to change my question once.
