Yes I thought it was bizarre behaviour as well, that did deserve some kind of action. A fine of the entire prize money seemed a little too convenient...I would have thought banning him for a number of future events would be more appropriate.
Yes I'd also like to know what's going to happen to the $45k!

Imagine if we did that at our club. No penalty high enough for that kind of behavior , shows he thinks he's above common decency and etiquette and has no respect. Throw the book at him and suspend him as well.

Personally I think AFL coaches in Australia should be arrested/fined for breaking the phones in coaches boxes. Imagine if a member of the public trashed payphones in the arena, they'd certainly be brought to account.

Actually I can relate to this......two years ago I won my first ever tournament...I'd just entered the veterans band, so thought I had a chance of semi final place maybe....as a junior I had been in the second band, so would often get through groups and that was it, and then football became my no.1 sport. Even at school, there was always one player better.

So, I got to the final, and was playing the favourite, who I had never beaten before (or since!),....and I played y best game ever, kept it close, toped him from hitting, and finished the chances I had within two balls. I own the first....this had happened before, then he'd take over....he took it to 1-1....and then I won the next two......I had had to keep my game so contained to get across the lie and did not allow myself to winning until I crossed the line...no glory shots!

When I did, I was ready to explode....I she hands, turned and aimed a kick at the barriers...I just graved them, nothing happened, then a colleague jumped on me....we were in the other players home venue, so he had had the big support two....and I then claimed down......

Luckily they didn't fine me the prize money.....not being any.....I;d have had to sell the plastic trophy!

But having played football and scored some big goals, you do get this explosion of emotion....for me it'd last about 5 seconds....so I think kicking barriers to bits was a bit extreme, and agree with the fine....he's a professional, and should be trained to behave on and off the table.....but I can see how it happens....and we don't know what was in his head....but hopefully he'll come out and apologies for the good of the game / youngsters watching.

I played a guy recently who was a real arrogant aggressive idiot, showing off to the onlookers, swearing, giving sings, and in the end squad up to our captain. Before ehe has been banned for punching a team mate. The stupid thing is, a 14/15 yea told junior is playing with him and copying his antics.

We should clamp down hard on anything of this nature.....so a big fine for the world champion has to be done to make it not copied......bans too. Kids are so easily influenced. The use of 'goods' with kids gets out of control with some....another tops there!

The sport needs some personality and passion instead of expectations of stiffer upper lip.

Christ, he just showed he's best in the world at something. Nobody got hurt and nothing of value was lost so there's no need to find anything to be upset about.

I think the concern is kids copy this behavior...and adults (same thing!) - so 1) its not very sportsman like / respectful, 2) no one got hurt...but that might not always be the case...a kid trying this 'celebration' in his local club could end badly....even in this example a piece of hording could have flew of into the crowd.

I understand how it can happen - you lose control for a second or two, but after he kicked the first barrier, he should have reeled himself in really...and it would have been no big deal.

And look what we are discussing - not a fantastic match and his skills, and that's ALL the kids were talking about at our club. When I said who saw the WC finals...they were all shaking there heads...then someone piped up, oh where that bloke went mad and kicked the hording to pieces, and most of them had seen that. But no one actually watched the game. I imagine they are all looking the incident up on you tube.

Shame.

In Australian football the coaches sit high up in the stands and relay messages to assistants below via a wired phone. There have been many cases where a coach has got very angry and kept slamming the phone on the bench until it breaks.

Ah, I see. This being the game played on the oval pitch, right?

Reminds me of my Alma Mater's long-time basketball coach - one night he got mad and threw a folding chair onto the court. I forget what they did to him - a suspension of x number of games, I think. What was really tiresome was for some time after that, if I ever mentioned which university I attended, I was always asked what I thought of Bob Knight. And then he got into some sort of situation with three Freshmen (triplets!) who he thought was being rude to him and he got fired. Huge riot in town, he had lots of fans. Ended up coaching in Lubbock, TX. Funny thing was someone I knew (who was quite famous locally - he hosted an Early Music program on the local Public Radio station) just got his PhD and ended up teaching.. at the same place. This was maybe three months before the coach followed him there.

This is the "think of the children" argument? Sensationalizing it in the media doesn't help and neither does abdicating responsibly for kids' behavior to completely unrelated figures.

ZJK similarly ripped his shirt after one championship, and Sebastian Vettel also got fined for doing donuts after winning a championship (rules later changed to specifically allow donuts...amending the ridiculous with more of it). Let's just say people overly concerned about others' opinions of them aren't as likely to break out in feats of merit.

Now after taking his money and clutching at their pearls just before fainting, the ITTF have decided that ZJK kicking the barriers was actually really cool. So cool, in fact, that they've decided to use it in a promotional freaking video (that looks like something they think they are directing at kids because it has rock and roll or something). Look at around 1:10 mark. They make it look pretty badass and I doubt this is going to discourage the kind of behavior they claim to be so appalled about.

Curious what people think of this. (Or as the previous commenter said, think of the children).

I guess this video fits the theme of ITTF "increasing TV coverage of TT". Cheering leaders...ZJK kicking things like he's just scored a touchdown...
Such bad taste!

This kids thing is just too precious, they have brains, they don't blindly follow, they will make their own judgements through family, lifestyle, school, socialisation and will, as history always repeats, continue to make their own mistakes.

One my children was the biggest rebel you could imagine, running away from school and disappearing for a few days at 15yo, now she's a teacher and great mum, go figure, we must have done something right!

This video is just too hypocritical for words, says much about the ittf and the peeps in charge.

I still do not think they should have stolen his prize money, there were other ways to deal with Jike, I also would have had more respect if the ittf said they were giving the money for Ebola or charity, but no, when you smell a rat, there is usually one close by!

The ittf is full of black holes and so not transparent, how can you respect an organisation that does not care for all of it's paying members, because if there was a choice, in all honesty, how many of us would pay, maybe a poll would be interesting?

If a kid (or adult) does this kinda of thing in a match at our/your club, we should just laugh it off? He's just a lad, having a teen tantrum? He'll grow out of it....or will he? Or should he be punished and shown it's not acceptable in our game? Or do we make a video of it promoting out club!?!?

I'd ban him for matches for a set time...and show it's not acceptable in our sport. Which prob should have happened in this case.

I've come across some real disrespectful idiots on the table, and while with some it would have made no difference, with others I am sure with better role models and influences as kids...or punishments for disrespectful behavior...they would not be behaving as they do at TT as adults, as often they don;t think they are doing anything wrong.
