Post subject:  OOAK Forum upgraded to https

Over the next few weeks, I hope to change the forum from http to https. There are many good reasons for this, you can Google for those yourself, but the main reasons I want to do it are:
1. More secure & potentially faster
2. No more annoying warnings about the page not being secure
3. Will improve ranking in Google, so may lead to more people finding our forum

How will it impact you?
There should be no impact at all to our members, most won't even notice the difference, and you won't need to do anything. Once it's in place, http://ooakforum.com will automatically redirect to https://ooakforum.com, and everything will look the same.

How will it be done?
There are quite a few steps involved for the changeover. The forum has been around for almost 12 years, and many posts, pictures, videos, etc have http links that need to be converted to https. I'll need to try different methods to do this as doing it manually is obviously out of the question. Youtube videos for example have all had http prefixes, and they'll need to change to https. Some pictures/videos may stop working (and some may actually start working again!), but the great majority are already served via https, so they should not be affected.

If there's anyone here who can offer their expertise in this area, I'd love to hear from you, as I'm far from an IT expert.

As usual, if you notice something not working on the forum, please post in this thread or send me a message.

It would use AutoSSL.

For those of you that want to try, https is already working. Just change your bookmark link of this site from http://ooakforum.com to https://ooakforum.com

Funny that now that I'm in the process of changing the site to http, I'm getting some queries as to why people's browser are saying that the site is not secure!

For those that are not aware, the site is as secure as it's always been, it's just that browser now give warning when the site does not run under https.
The forum will soon automatically redirect to https, so it's no longer an issue.

As I mentioned before, if the warnings bother you, just access the site (and update your bookmarks) via https://ooakforum.com and the warnings should be gone.

The forum is now running on HTTPS, which is the more secure protocol, as has some significant advantages as explained above.

If you're still trying to access the forum on (or have bookmarked) the old HTTP, you will be automatically redirected to the equivalent HTTPS protocol. so you should not have to change anything.

You may have been logged out when then change occurred, but once you log back in, it should be all back to normal.

You can see the difference at the top of your browser bar as follows (it may look a little different for other different browsers), the first one is how it looked before, the second picture is how it should look now:

The forum wouldn't accept my password for a while after this upgrade, but I was able to log in successfully today with the same saved password without going through the recovery process. Was this related to the https switchover?

Yes it's possible, but not directly. It was probably something in your browser cache that kept some old the old data, mixing it up with the new data. Eventually this expires so it would reload the new data. Not a lot I can do about this on my end, but glad to see you back.
