OOAK Table Tennis Forum

We seem to be getting more and more spam on this forum...it happens to virtually every forum...

I'll delete the spam messages and ban the users when I see them, but if I miss some please let me know...

Didn't think it would be a problem so early...but this forum is already ranking reasonably well on google (not sure why ), which tends to bring in more spammers...

If you can think of any other measures I can take please let me know...

u could ask google to remove it from their searches but I dunno if you'd really like that.

You could maybe validate yourself the inscription on the forum, if the profile seems strange you may ask something by mail to confirm the inscription.

Servio: Yes it's a good thing for google to find us, so it can bring more people that are interested in our topics to the forrum.

Diabolosyl: Yes I could set it up so that I need to approve new members, however this means someone might need to wait for a day before I get a chance to approve them...they'll often lose interest...

At the moment, they need to activate their account via an activations Email, which alrady stops a lot of automatic subscriptions.

I have deleted about 50 accounts of members registered but that made no posts and appeared to be spammers. If I have deleted your legitimate account, my apologies, please register again.

I have also implented some new anti-spam measures, which will hopefully slow them down.

appoint some friends or ppl u trust as admin so spam can dealt with shortly and of course discuss what measures should be taken (deleting account or alike things).

Yes i agree most spammer posts links, however their automated bots don't actually check to see if links are allowed or not, so they will still posts regardless. It's a good idea though, and I'll look into it, not sure how hard it is to implement. Yes I know who you're talking about...

My current setting seesm to have slowed the spammer right down, so perhaps this will do for now.

It has come to my attention that spamming is a real problem. I never noticed too much though. Maybe I am oblivious to it *shrugs*. Or they are dealt with real quickly? *shrug*

Are there any guidelines to this spam thing? Speedplay you decscribed it to me in DTTW which was good. Does it mostly have alot to do with people trying to sell stuff? I "created" a funny thread "Sportcraft Collection" which was totally funny and light hearted, but that may have been considered spam *shrugs*.

Haggisv, at the end of the day, you have to make the judgements on what is classified as spam and deal with it accordingly. Hopefully with given reason too. Makes it much more appreciated that way *thumbs up*. Your a reasonable guy but on forums people don't know that. Guess you would have to be considering this is your business and whatnot (unlike mods elsewhere). They don't need reasons...

The spam I'm referring to is the automated messages that are posted by bots (programs) not people. All they want to do is spread links to their websites in the messages, and provide no relevant content. This is the biggest problem, as they can pop up very quickly and polute a forum. Because their content is often pornographics in nature, people can easilty be offended as well. Most of it is regarding pornography or selling some sort of prescription drugs... I have put some things in place which stops most of them, but some are very smart and still get through...

Yes I know what you're talking about, and that's much harder to deal with, since it becomes a matter of opinion whether it's suitable for the forum or not...

Hopefully we won't have to deal with things like this here
