The game is about so much more than just the serve. There are topspin returns, or disguised no-spin returns, heavy chops, disguised moderate chops, side spins, all during the game that involve nothing unethical or illegal. This is all pure skill and a multi-colored ball will just take this away. I guy like Filus would hate this. If the spins of the modern game are so daunting that we want to make it easier for the opponent to read them, we can always go back to hardbat - which I can watch for all of five minutes before getting numbed out by the monotony. I am not in favor of this at all; and I say that knowing that this is not a new happening. |

These balls were meant to make spin visible to the audience on TV screens. You can see them in action if you troll YouTube for old footage of Super League games. Unfortunately they don't really make spin THAT visible to the viewer, though I think that can be fixed with better cameras and better video editing (slo-mo, etc.). Since they haven't kept using them in the Super League, we can assume it's been dropped and they're not going to adopt them for general use. What's it like to play with them? Try making one yourself, just put four large black dots on a ball with a marker pen and see if it really makes a difference. Yes, with the dots you can definitely see the spin. Actually, I think I'll make a couple more balls like this and we'll try using them next weekend - what with a couple people starting to use long pips and one guy using bare wood, it would be interesting to see if it makes a difference. I don't think it will except to a couple of us. Iskandar |

CHILDREN SHOULD LIKE THOSE BALLS .... Yes, you can see ball's rotation pretty clearly while watching TV slow replays. And you will see no rotation in actual play with a naked eye. However, the multi-coloured balls is a useful aid for teaching young players how to read opponent's service. Be happy. |
