Post subject:  The story of Seamless Table Tennis Ball

The seamless table tennis ball was invented by Zhang Huilun, a table tennis lover from Guangzhou, China. Zhang noticed that traditional seamed table tennis balls were uneven in wall thickness which resulted in an unstable flight path during play. Through three months’ research and trial in his laboratory, Zhang Huilun successfully made the first seamless table tennis ball in the world by the end of 2008. The ball withstood all kinds of tests and plays and proved to be superior quality. In early 2009, Zhang Huilun had a meeting with Xu Shaofa, the former head coach of Chinese national table tennis team to introduce the seamless balls to him. Xu was very excited about it and immediately decided to co-found a company with Zhang for developing and producing seamless balls. In September 2009, the company was officially founded in Guangzhou. After over a year’s hard work, the set of equipments for producing seamless balls were successfully brought into being. Mass production of seamless balls started in May 2011. ITTF conducted various tests and invited players to play with the seamless balls for a long period of time and finally approved seamless balls as official balls in international events on February 4th, 2014. Now, seamless balls have been known and spread all over the world, winning a good reputation and love from table tennis players.

A comparison of seamless ball and celluloid ball:

Thx for the story, sssandy. :) I have a question and I hope you can answer it. I read on MyTT that DHS was supposed to be making the seamless ball together with XSF. For one or another reason this alliance broke. I read, however, that DHS has abandonned their seamed plastic ball and are thinking about going together again with XSF. Are these rumours true? And if they are: how far are the negotiations? No details, off course, but a general outline. Can we expect a seamless ball from DHS in the near future?

I would also like to know what your company plans to do to actually get the ball used in major tournaments. In my opinion, this ball is the best plastic ball on the market -- rounder, more durable, better bounce -- but it is crucial that it is adopted more widely in competitions. It would be great if XSF was making balls for more companies, beyond Yinhe, Stag, Nexy, etc.

I wish there was a Nittaku seamless or a DHS seamless.

Before there is a contract or any legal confirmation, I couldn't give you a Yes answer. i can only tell you guys that DHS is talking with us about the cooperation.

There was indeed bad blood beween DHS and us in the past, but we are still happy if we can work together again. That will be a win-win situation, not only for DHS and us, but also for players all over the world.

Thanks you guys for your support for seamless balls!

I have written Nittaku requesting that they consider using the Xushaofu ball as their China sourced non-premium ball given the low durability and general low quality of the Nittaku SHA. They replied back though their response was a bit "politic" as expected, mentioning that the balls continue to be developed.

Anyway, if you want Nittaku to supply seamless balls, it can't hurt to just ask.

This history seems incredibly brief, leaving out how the ITTF got involved in the whole thing and was initially promoting the seamless ball. It also leaves out the DHS connection.

Yes - sounds more like the politically correct, sanitized, mythological version of history.

I hope more players apply pressure from our side. For instance, complain to Joola and whoever is rebranding the seamed DHS plastic balls. I've done that with Nittaku.

Anyway, ssandy, you should have the confidence of knowing that you make a superior product. You need to make every effort to get the word out. The marketing campaign is crucial. Sponsoring events is a good idea, more the better. I think the market has been conceded in Europe too easily.

I am going to start doing what wturber has been doing.
