Played for a couple of hours with two new Double Fish 40+ Balls. My most recent 40+ ball experience is with Nittaku 3-Star Premium balls which play fine but become shiny and slick after just a couple of matches, thus altering their bounce off the table to a significant degree.

Double Fish 40+ balls seemed very nice at first. Super easy to spin and loop onto the table.. maybe even more so than the 40mm celluloid balls of yesteryear. Then, as we played on, the ball seemed to be softening up, getting quieter and floatier. Without warning it broke wide open (not on the seam) when hit by a strong forehand. On to new ball #2 which was when we noticed the obvious difference between the warmed-up first ball and this cold second ball. The adjustments required were not subtle as it was behaving very different from the ball that just broke.

#2 broke in the same way as #1 with even less playing time.. perhaps less than one hour.

I dislike the Nittaku Nittaku 3-Star Premium 40+ balls due to the way they change over time. Double Fish 40+ balls change even faster and they're prone to breaking. Rating: Fail.

Yeah, I remember we went through a three-box in about a couple weekends of doubles. First one got stepped on, the other two developed cracks (which were hard to notice at first). Didn't pay attention to them becoming "soft"..

I played a tournament with them a month ago, they lasted about a 3 sets, maybe 4 before getting soft. I noticed a deformation in the ball and it lost its spherical shape which impacted the flight and bounce of the ball. The batch we had didn't break as often but there was a significant amount of breakages, just less then mentioned here. The most annoying thing was the ball only lasting 3-4 sets before becoming unplayable due to uneven shape.

Don't know too many TT balls that survive a good stepping on

If you find some that play well, they'd be a good buy :P

I wonder if these balls are pre- or post- "material updated". Problem is the one box I bought had no date of manufacture on it. Haven't played with that box yet, either.

iskandar,

The boxes of Double Fish balls I have seen (bought at AUD 1 per ball in HK late last year) have a QC or QA date - ours were November 2014 so very old.

Had an egg shaped XSF tonight.....got a stamping! Noise was loud enough to stop play on several tables!

So the jury's still out, then - the current balls may (or may not) be better.
