It seems the future of celluloid balls is doomed, as most people are changing over the plastic. As a result it's very annoying that no orange 3* plastic balls are available yet, as some clubs require these to get better contrast against white walls.

I really don't understand why none of the manufacturers have come up with orange 3* balls yet, isn't it a great market opportunity to be the first?

One possible explanation is that they're still struggling to make good white 3* plastic balls, and since white is still the official colour, they're spending all their resources there.

Any other theories?

I'd say you're on the money unless adding the orange pigment to the plastic is causing some kind of problem, like deformation or weakening. It hardly seems likely though.

As a stop-gap, if you were to color the white balls with an orange marker all over, I wonder how it would play. Worth a try to see if it covers the short term?

It's annoying as it gives the last few lower league players a last argument as to why not to change...then juniors starting out in lower leagues, get coached with new ball, then play league with old ball, then pay / travel to enter tournament and play with diff ball.

I don't remember ever playing with an orange ball till the 90's anyway....coped ok then.

Surely people can put a curtain up or paint a wall?!

Sometimes, in larger sports hall lighting can be the issue...but they are just doing themselves more harm by not changing....when the new orange ones arrive they will be long way behind rest of us converts.

Often the club does not own the venue, but it's a hall that's shared among other activities, so painting a wall or putting up curtains is often not possible.

Note that Nittaku already make a plastic 44mm ball, so they must have some material in orange already...44mm balls have no ITTF reqquirement though, so an equivalent 40+ using the same material may not meet the ITTF requirements... but have they tried?

I remember from 2 years ago when I stopped playing and acting as referee, that there was a discussion about ITTF retiring orange balls from official competitions. If that was the case, that would explain why no manufacturer is going for 3* ITTF approved orange plastic balls...

PD: yes, I'm still alive :D

Hi Nittaku. Good to see you have survived the European crisis you were in when we last heard from you!

Haggisv, you obviously give no credence to my suggestion :P |(

I did actually  but white balls coloured orange would technically not be legal, and I think that would put off most clubs... The good thing would be that even if the ink does come off a little, it's unlikely to show on black or red rubbers. It would also keep the kids real busy for a few days.

There are some orange poly training balls emerging

https://bribartt.co.uk/product/vision-s ... ls-seamed/

These are meant to be OK, but I haven't tried them yet.

I wonder if they were meant to be 3*, but they got a 100% rejection, so they made them 1*?

I find it amusing that they've gone to plastic balls for the 44mm event.. AND decided to call them "44+" balls...

Probably just haven't had a chance to get them approved yet - remember Butterfly's EZ Ball?

I haven't still touched a plastic ball. We play surrounded by 4 white walls. Only Orange balls are useable.

Almost the same for me except that I have hit with a seamless for 15-20 minutes - not enough time to adapt.

I have asked Torsten about orange plastic balls, but he didn't have any more information than that none had been submitted for approval.

I have also asked haggisv as a distributor to ask his suppliers about orange plastic balls. He has yet to get back about that (hint, hint, haggisv :) ).
