I'd really like to get one of these, so that I can measure hardness of sponges...

It seems to be hard to find one that will do the job, and some confusion on that scale to get, and how the measurments should be done.

Ideally I'd want on that I can just push onto the back of any rubber, and it will give me the hardness reading... failing that, what's the closest that i can get?

Hope somewhere here knows lots about these instruments...

The one I've seen on ebay is here:

Cheers!

haha.
It was I who showed that to Rob!
Buahahahahahaha

Now everyone wants one.

Get the Shore OO scale. Also called foam. 115g spring mass. A is too heavy (spring mass 889g) and C is wayyyy too heavy - you'll barely move the needle.

So the one I showed in my link above is the one he's got? That's a C scale isn't it?

I think it's a C scale meter with an OO scale pin.
The meter scale doesn't relaly matter, since they all pretty much do 0 to 100.

So is the one in my link the one, or you can't tell? It does not mentioned the OO scale pin, but it does mention foam. The one Rob has does seem to tie up with some of his sponge measurements, which is encouraging... The weight of 115g sounds good, should be light enough to do measurments just on the back of the rubber, without the topsheet having too mcuh of an impact...

Good thought about Clark Rubber, gundam, I'll give them a ring...

Cheers!

I think the one in your link is the OO type. You'd probably have to ask them. It's definitely the one I linked to Rob when he was asking about them a while back.

Clark Rubber will probably try and sell you an expensive durometer :P Shore branded ones start from about 800USD or so.

So 'Shore' is a brand, not a standard? If there are so many different ones out there, it's not surpirsing the chinese come up with different readings...

it's a standard and apparently it's also a brand.

If you do end up getting one, you should use it to test the variance in softness between a new sheet of rubber and that same sheet after its been super-primed/treated with speed glue or clean tuning. I'm interested to know how much softer these sheets actually get when treated.

Got my durometer today, yippee!!!

Yes I want to test a range of rubbers and make a big chart...

I also want to test hardnesses before and after different speed glues and rubber treatment, as JSK already mentioned.... This should really show what the different substances do...
