I recently saw a design on the internet for a concept "next-generation" table tennis table (http://designchapel.com/blog/2012/02/09/waldner/) that incorporates a computer and touch screen interface into it. The immediate issue that I notice is in the net, but that could be changed. Could this be the true "future" of table tennis, or is it another idea that will never take off? What issues do you see with something like this?

I would like the fact that it detects net serves and sketchy edge balls (did they hit the side or the top?????), but net balls themselves would play differently, due to the hard "net".

Obviously this would be VERY expensive....and might not be all that durable, but who knows about that....

I wonder how similar the bounce is to painted fiberboard?

It's hard to say, as it isn't in production yet, but I would imagine that it would be hard to replicate a normal bounce while still having a working touch screen.

We definitely need this for a better table tennis..

Wondering how much the price will be if it is realized..

First of all they will increase the ball size to 50mm and it will be made out of A new
man made fiber that is stronger and lighter than a 38mm ball. The table will have automatic scoring devices and laser trackers and fault line motion camera's. The net will be made of Kevlar or carbon fiber. The blade's will all be the same. possibly made from corn and man made fibers and space age polymers. The next generation of rubber will be not unlike what we use today, except they will be made from old tires and treated with special chemicals to give them different effects. ANti will be gone as well as any pimpled rubber. The rules will also change and it will be best of 9 games and the game will go to 7 points. Players must wear speedo like outfits and hats. Special glasses that pick up spin will be allowed. Average speed on the ball will be about 78 miles an hour. No foot stomping and grunts will be allowed. Fans can cheer anytime during the play. This game will be played in ZERO gravity. have a nice day LOL *PS there will be only one equipment dealer available.

Peace GIG

New blade set-up... Nittaku Monophonic with Dawie 388d-1 ox and Big slam max ( really like this one) down to FH rubber selections--I like it better than talon
flaired handle and 90 grams

That dealer will, officially, have no connection to Microsoft or Apple.
Technology concentration would have an adverse effect on competitive marketing, and be in breach of anti-trust legislation.

Looks nice, for sure, but there's one big problem I can see straight away: how do you play short balls with those front leg-panels? I mean, if I have to push or attack a short ball my right leg usually needs to go under the table. With a high-tech table like this I'll either stub my toe or bang my knee!

Exactly. Just like all these concept cars of the automobile companies.

- much too expensive
- nobody needs these features
- how shall this "table" be stored

That would be a big problem for wheelchair players as well...

The "legs" definitely need to be moved in to meet the clearance rules.

And the net needs to be a real net...can you imagine the rebound from balls hitting that hard surface?! I do like the idea of a sensor for serves though; since it's a computer it would (should?) be able to tell a serve from a regular shot and flash a LET if the ball touches the net ONLY on a serve. Outdoor tennis already has that technology.

It would also be great for those line calls when serving in doubles that start so many arguments.
