There is one player I know for sure in our league who uses "Triumph" rubbers which are very old. They don't even have the ITTF logo on to suggest they were ever authorised - the same with some pre made setups and starter training bats from Sunflex.

Actually, I wonder if the Triumph rubber wasn't this:

(from the ITTF site.)

There's quite a bit of starter rubber that's been approved. I'm pretty sure this is starter rubber, and I'm pretty sure that's the supermarket chain:

USATT isn't strict at all for the lesser tournaments. Plenty of illegal rubbers in use.

Not checked by officials at our club, but there are some zealous members who will spruik a rubber is not allowed...usually pips of some variety. I know one time when a member told another his rubber had been made illegal....I think it was 802 :P   (Of courseI had to set them straight).

Are ALL rubbers made in Germany ESN Tensors? The two Tensors I have (Palio Macro Pro and Rasant) have the Tensor logo next to "Made in Germany", but I notice a lot of German rubbers of many brands do not have Tensor logos - maybe there is another company making rubber in Germany.

Not all rubbers made by ESN are Tensors, they make plenty of other non-Tensors. Tensor is a Trademark of ESN for the 'glue effect' rubbers only. Some of the manufacturers use their own logo/trademark to indicate the same technology, presumable to make it sound like it's their own technology. I'm sure they would pay ESN for this privilege. ;)

BOMB Epoch of China, Beijing is now using the term of "tension rubber" in naming their own products.
The BOMB product quality is much the same as original ESN "tensor".

Our league that is based in the south west of the UK stipulates that the rubber shall be ITTF approved and that the colours should be one red and one black.

It rarely gets mentioned apart from when someone is having a bad day or feels like winding up the opponent.

We have one member that really should know better who has had the same rubbers for about 20 years apparently and I swear that his black rubber is actually a red rubber that has been coloured in with a black marker pen !!! No-one ever says anything to him and they just accept that he has some weird anti-spin rubbers??? They aren't, they are just very old and very dead, but he loves it and wins with it.

Most players in our league buy from the major suppliers who tend to only sell approved rubbers, so mostly it self administers???

Our league requires conformity to ITTF LARC and rules, but in practice, as no one ever asks to see the opponent's rubbers, who knows? There are many people using very old setups, some of which I am sure are no longer on the LARC, if they ever were.

The only time anyone ever asked to see my bat was at a training camp, when a playing partner asked to make sure I wasn't using "funny" rubber.

I played someone in a league match last night who had the oldest rubbers I think I've ever played agains. By his own admission they were 40 years old - he said they were antiloop and certainly they played like very slow anti.

To be fair I couldn't think of anything I'd rather play against and I won very easily. I suspect the rubbers wouldn't be on the LARC and certainly wouldn't have the ITTF approval stamp on them. Would I have compained if I'd thought I might struggle? Probably not on balance although I might if I thought they'd been deliberately "doctored" but that's a different can of worms.

That's very similar to my region. Official umpires do check the rubbers, but I've never seen one compare it to the actual current LARC, so as long as it looks ok and has the ITTF logo, I would expect they'll pass it.... unless someone asks them to check.
