No, probably not as much protection as foam, but in my experience very much adequate.

See if you can find this stuff or similar:

http://www.amazon.com/Dealglad%C2%AE-Se ... +stripping

It's actually two strips, you can separate them and use them singly. Comes in different widths, too, doesn't have to cover the entire width of the blade to protect it from bumps. If it's too wide for the blade that's OK too since it will cover some of the sponge. Comes in three colors (not red, though.. )

That was "Type D", there's also "Type E":

Of course, you do want your blade to be "waterproof, windproof"...

Not necessarily - a lot of the old hardbats had rounded edges.

A guy at my club uses duct tape as edge tape - it overlaps onto the rubber by about 10mm! I wonder if the rubbers are glued on at all, or just held by the duct tape...

Iskandar.

I did just have a consultation with Mr. Tury about those products you propound as a protective tape on the blade's edge.
Werner Tury did suggested that you might run into troubles if using those products at official events.
Due to a huge protrusion over the blade, all those duct strips have to be considered an illegal attachment to the blade, and it also does not comply with the Rule 2.4.5

Quote:
Rule 2.4.5
The blade .. shall be continuous...

With which Tury's suggestion I strongly agree.

Does anyone know any other places that sell foam edge tape? The only one I can find is made by Dr Neubauer, and this tends to be a little expensive, so I'm hoping to find a cheaper one.

Dirty cheap. Decent quality. 1.5 mm thick polymer material.

So I see. 1.5mm is OK, 2mm is an "extension of the racket" and therefore "illegal". Ridiculous.. I suppose it's a matter of how much protection you want - and whether you want to see "Huieson" on the side of your racket, you usually don't want people thinking you're using something from Huieson.. . Other than that, sure, it'll work in a fashion - especially if you put on 3 or 4 layers.. The weather stripping should be fine, especially if you find the "E" type in black - just stay away from Igor's tournaments.

I use 3M double-sided foam tape. Stick the regular edgetape on top of the foam and it gives adequate protection.

I have had it prevent the breakages of my balsa blades quite well. Though balsa is very prone to breaking chipping and cracking if u hit it edge-on.

Also illegal if you use Igor's criterion.

For those of you who tend to bang expensive carbon-arylate blades against table edges and don't live in the US - Type D and Type E weatherstripping IS available on AliExpress!

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/5M-I-D- ... 10418.html

The "Flat D" type would seem the least out-of-the-ordinary (i.e. weird) and least likely to trigger Igor's buttons. Still, I'd avoid his tournaments. Cheap, too (about $3 including shipping). Available in white, grey and black.

Come on now ! 3M foam tape is NOT 2mm thick !!!

And you get a wide variety of widths ! 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm etc...

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/ ... 7497&rt=r3

Surely we are not restricted by what igorponger says, but rather what the ITTF umpires / organizers find acceptable ?
