After a previous failed attempt to make a ball picker upper with a bucket and garden stake, i thought I'd have another go with better materials. A mate in the plumbing game gave me some 150mm pvc pipe to start me on my way. Materials :-
150mm Pvc pipe, mine is about 27cm.
A length of 20mm Pvc pipe
A couple of bolts
50lb fishing line

I had to buy the pipe for the handle for $3, the rest was at home. Normally the 150mm pipe is about $26 per metre.

It was just a matter of drilling holes around the outside with a 2.5mm drill bit, threading the line, then attaching the handle.

Here's the result.

Very happy !! :)

Spacings should be about 35mm. It will break in a week by the way. I made the same one at my first attempt using normal fishing line. Then moved on to steel leader as in fishing equipment. If it is called different in the States it is just steel wire . They are weldable with a lighter. You might go through few trial and error but you're on the right track.

Had it over a month, used plenty of times, it's not going to break. Honestly apart from the handle, it's the same as what you buy locally for $50. Will let you know if it does though so you can say 'told you so' :)

I've had a closer look and the spacing is about 23mm between the lines. This though does not represent putting holes every 23cm around the perimeter. I've measured around the edge and working around anti clockwise, the holes in mm around the pipe are at 0, 10, 65, 110, 140, 170, 202, 246, 307, 318, 360, 390,420, 453.

Start by using the holes at 0 and 10 to tie some kind of knot then simply thread the line and then tie it around the other side. Happy to post more pictures if required.

I find retractable fishing nets work well - can retracts to fit in my coaching bag nicely...I think, if you could do the same with your pipes, make it so they slot inside each other maybe?

Yeah, the ones I've seen here also use thick fishing line. I suppose weed whacker line should work also (if it's round - some of these have a square or other sort of non-round cross section). If you do want the steel fishing leader it would be something like this:

Seven strand stainless steel with a nylon coating. But I think it's overkill.

The ones I saw had one cross-strand crossing over in the middle, and whoever made them tied the cross-strand to the others where they crossed. This somewhat bigger than yours, though, it used a one gallon paint bucket.
