There is a statement that I keep running into while reading rubber reviews that puzzles me a bit and that is that rubber works great (grips, spins) with plastic ball but somehow sucks with old celluloid ball which makes little sense to me.

General consensus seems to be that plastic ball is more difficult to spin so if a rubber is good at gripping and spinning the plastic ball then shouldn't it be even better at spinning the celluloid ball? Can a rubber be only plastic ball specialized?

Which rubbers in particular?

The latest post about this issue that prompted me to start this thread was on the french forum (http://forum.tennis-de-table.com/t/tsp- ... d/8171/131) regarding TSP Regalis where one user stated that rubber was good for p-ball but had no grip on the celluloid ball.

But this really isn't Regalis specific, I have ran into similar claims at least 5-6 times on different modern rubbers reviews so I am just generally curious if such a property is possible.

I honestly doubt the validity of any such claims. Perhaps its the perception of a certain player, or perhaps the condition of the balls they're playing with.

I think you are very correct, and I have never really believed the premise. Some of it was marketing from companies, and about as meaningful as "the new rubber for the 11-point game!!!"

BUT, the new balls are in general just a little bit larger and heavier and sink faster, so some people might want a slightly faster setup overall to compensate for that, and such a setup might have been just a bit out of control with 40, and ok with 40+.

I have not needed to make any such change personally.

There is zero reason to believe that the new balls have less grip to the rubber. Indeed, some of them have a rougher surface than celluloid, so if anything would adhere more.
