Thanks Cobalt very interesting post. This is something that has taken me years to solve. Firstly it is finding the right blade that supports your style of play then fine tune by adding the right rubbers.
But definitely the blade first it needs to be an extension of you.
Then always researching & experimenting it never ends. :^) |(

I have to vote blade given personal experience. There's more variation there how it performs when you hit light vs medium vs hard etc. Due to different layers of the blade.

Rubbers dont feel too different as long as they are all tacky or all non tacky.

I was about to say 'rubber', but then changed my mind. Both are equally important/noticeable. Try TSP Triple Spin Chop in 1 mm vs. Tibhar MX-P on the same blade. Then try either on Dr. Neubauer Barricade Def vs. Viscaria or what have you.

How could the blade be more important ? A blade without rubber cannot impart spin.

As opposed to a rubber without a blade, which cannot impart speed?

I think Pingskills refers to the mainstream players... a long as you have a blade that's roughly fits your style, the choice of rubbers are more important.
However for more specialised style, especially for those with pimple/anti, the blade becomes more and more important.

You could play with blade without rubber, but not with rubber without blade. Ha!

I’ll post the clip when I find it again.

Before rubber was invented, people played with bare wood. And it was possible to play. I suppose there was also sandpaper, but that came afterwards..

Wow, he's good! That's a HUGE blade!

Of course the only reason he did not use rubber on the blade, is because he could not find a sheet big enough!
