I occasionally get the feeling that when people say scalpel they actually mean xacto/craft knife. I tried them once, but didn’t like the angle of the cutting edge. They're closer but still less thick. And the common #11 blades are a lot narrower, so they're going to flex more. They were designed for cutting accurate curves in paper, so they have very sharp-angled points. Some of the other blades might be more appropriate, there's another line of Xacto handles and blades which are larger, for instance. Scalpels are quite different compared to Xacto knives - the handles are flat rather than round and the way the blades attach are different (apparently designed to snap on while keeping the blades sterile, I think). Again, several blade shapes available (there's even a #11). Iskandar |

No, that's something else altogether.. I don't think we need forged Damascus steel knives to cut rubber - China made disposable box cutter knife blades are plenty good enough. Actually, some people prefer scissors. Iskandar |

Iskandar, thank you so much for recommending the HL5. Arrived today and got to play with it and loved it. FH: Slapped on the boosted NHP3TO Max thickness in black and it was blistering quick. Now for my level of play : Push game - Excellent Spinny 3rd ball Loops - Excellent Topspin - Excellent Drives and Smashes - Virtually all overshot the table so very poor. Totally down to my technique and skill though. The rubber does feel a bit mushy though. Boosted with 3 layers of Falco Long. BH: Rasanter R37 2.0mm red -  Worth mentioning it was very humid and maybe that affected the rubber.Pushes - Slow pushes barely made it to the net. Chops - Not enough backspin and were easier than ever for my training partners to put away. Drives/Flicks/Loops - While the drives came off so so during slow drives while training, in-game it was a mess. Rubber felt like it was barely able to grip the ball. Wasn't able to flick so well either. Could this be because of my technique? I usually pull these strokes off with decent accuracy. Rubbers used in the recent past which helped me get these strokes in pretty well of late - Rakza 7 soft, Rising Dragon and T05. Wondering if I should get my T05 out and pasted on for tomorrow's session  Will lose control of the short game for sure with it but wondering if it will help in the other departments. With regards to the scalpels you guys were discussing, I use something close to a #11, planning on however trying a #22 soon after the initially scoring gently once or twice with a #11. The #22 uses a more rounded edge so won't let rubber crumble. Flex comes when you use the surgeons blade handle on which you need to snap on these blades. If you search Amazon you'd find blades that can be fixed into xacto knife handles and that setup is much sturdier. |
