One of the table tennis tables I play on locally is an old Jaques rollaway with only a 16mm top. Compared to newer 22mm & 25mm tables I also play on the bounce is a lot lower and slower which requires a lot of adjustment.

Is it possible speed up an old thin top table by say gluing an additional sheet of 6mm or 8mm MDF to the underside?

Any ideas welcome other than using it for firewood.

Probably better to glue/screw 20mm MDF to the TOP and chop 20mm off the end of the legs..

I always thought that the MDF thickness + Paint used on the high-quality ITTF-approved tables is what made them high-bounce and "friction-less" ?

Can I use a specific kind of paint, or thinner, or primer, or stain, or varnish, or PU-varnish, etc ?

Will that make the "casul" TT-table into an "ITTF"-approved one ? ;-)

In the old days they said to use blackboard paint. And I saw cans of blackboard paint at the local craft store the other day. Now, of course, no one knows what a "blackboard" is any more...

We tried using blackboard or chalkboard paint on an old table and it was too rough/grippy.

Manufacturers probably use a spay applied acrylic based paint with a matt surface.

From what I remember of tables back in the 1970s, they WERE rougher and grippier than today's tables. Or maybe that's just the cheap locally made ones.

And blackboards WERE often green, too... They actually used chalk in school.
