At first I used polyurethane as suggested by Hookshot years ago. Then I misplaced the can when moving. Then I tried one of those for table tennis use with small bottle and sponge at the top. After i used it up, I refilled the bottle with waterproof/waterblock liquid they use for bricks/wood surface. The liquid is white and a bit thicky just like water based glue. A 500ml/1000ml bottle would last and last. I did a calculation once. With one small bottle of approximately 25ml I managed to seal 26 whole blades (heads, sides, handles) with two thin layers, if only heads it could seal more blades.

Don't buy a pre-made racquet unless you are just starting out and aren't sure that you want to continue and it is there on the shelf to buy.

Don't buy a really fast blade. Stick to something that is all round.

Don't buy the fastest most spinniest rubber.

Don't buy pimples out (long, medium or short) rubber unless you are absolutely certain that that is your game.

Don't buy antispin rubber unless you are absolutely certain that that is your game.

Don't buy the most expensive set up around. Reasonable blades can be had for under $20 and rubbers for under the same amount per side.

Don't believe all the blade and rubber reviews that you read. Pay attention to what might benefit them from the review and who they are.

Do try out your friends', acquaintances' coach's setups and find out what they are if they suit you.

Do ask either a knowledgeable friend / acquaintance or coach that have watched you play what they think would suit you.

Once you have settled on equipment don't go changing unless it gets damaged beyond repair or it is absolutely not suiting you. (don't be an EJ).

Invest any money you are tempted to spend on new and (supposedly) better equipment on coaching.

...this ones based purely on my observations, and so I feel the urge to mention ..

Please AVOID buying equipment, simply cause you see professionals (or higher-level players) using it...

That's strange. These should be available just about anywhere. Where do you live? Try hardware stores, department stores, building supply stores, woodworking supply stores... Brands include Minwax, Red Devil, Pye...
