hello folks,

nearly 6yr old son is finally tall enough for me to hit TT with him at the table (without assistance).

in teaching him very beginnings of FH loop the crappy joola paddles I got (4 pack) have essentially no grip and he can't generate spin.

I DID let him borrow my Timo Boll ALC with Adidas P5s which was great until... he smacked it into the corner of the table accidentally and ruined 1 side with a gash.

SOOO. I need to get him a reasonable 1st paddle ... nothing fancy or pricey but something he can learn good stroke habits and will last a bit...

i figure mark V rubber perhaps but not sure of a cheap (but not fragile) blade...

suggestions??

Thanks in advance.

Kids are pretty rough on equipment. I wouldn't be wasting money yet on Mark V. Id be either getting a 729 or DHS. pre-made from www.tabletennisshop.com.au or a Sanwei M8 combo from Ali express. In fact get 2.

That's a year or two earlier than kids are typically started on TT around here but as long as he can reach above the table I don't see what you have to lose.

Of prime importance is keeping the weight of the paddle down to, perhaps, 130-140g (most adult paddles are in the 175-200g range). The head size can be 70-80% as large as an adult blade and still be perfectly functional. And obviously, the handle should be quite small; not just "small adult". I see young kids struggling with 190g adult-sized paddles and they're obviously being hindered by the over-sized equipment.

Thanks, yes but I;ve already been waiting sooooo long and he's excited just to have any kind of rally (we let ball bounce as many times as needed).

Will def keep that in mind for size issues. its soo cool when he actually Loops a FH with topsin (a rarity) it just tickles me to imagine the future! :)

Actually, come to think of it.. there should be all sorts of hardbats available in department stores. If the kid can barely see over the table these would probably be light enough and easy to control. If there is a Daiso store near you they sell them. In a couple of years get him a M8 premade.. he'll be ready for some actual coaching then.
