Finally got to play that rubber last night.. I really didn't play it a lot because I really didn't feel comfortable with it which might have something to do with the blade that I've used it on.. Not sure..

1. Blade/Style/Level
Rubber was glued to a LKT TOXIC 3 Defensive blade. I'm playing a blocking style, mostly backhand at US 2100 level (this usually puts me in the top 5 - 7% of all players)

2. Physical properties
The pips are medium grippy with textured pips tops. They seem harder than the ones on the SE7EN block. My sheet was black and OX
Pips geometry seemed fairly regular and normal to me.

3. Speed:
a) The speed of the rubber at low impact, such as return of serves, short pushes was fairly slow (somewhere near Meteor 8512 and SE7EN block)
b) The speed when blocking against fast loops was way too fast for my taste and that was the reason that I stopped trying to use it. All my blocks against hard hits went long. The Toxic 3 is a fairly fast Defensive blade.. I might try to glue up the rubber on my Butterfly Grubba variant blade which is slower.
4. Spin and reversal.
Reversal was fairly good, maybe even slightly better than on the SE7EN block. Producing spin was possible but not a whole lot of spin could be produced with it. When chopping hard behind the table, it's possible to produce noticeable spin but not enough that a good opponent wouldn't be able to attack it.

5. Sensitivity to spin:
The rubber has a very low throw (trajectory) and is compareable to DAWEI 388D-1. It seems like a slower version of 388D-1 and plays extremely similar other than the speed. Sensitivity to spin is pretty low at high impact and of course higher at slower speed and heavy spin which is normal for grippy pips.

6. Control:
Control was good when pushing and blocking against low to medium speed.. However, the low trajectory requires some adjustment. Against high speed shots, I blocked long.

8. Reference:
For those who like DAWEI 388D-1 but think that it's too fast, you might want to take a look at the SE7EN Control..

I only played a total of 10 minutes with the rubber, so my review might not be 100% accurate..

Interesting review. How do you tell the difference between the "Control" and "Block" versions in OX? Is there any identification on the rubber?

There is NO difference and no marking indicating which one it is.. You'll only feel the difference when you play them.. I will still try the rubber on the Butterfly blade to see if it's not just the blade which is making the difference..

Hi Olivier!

In my opinion, if you have no marking difference between Block and Control, it means that the top-sheets are the same and that Control, Block and the third one are different only with different sponges (same principe as the different Nimbus).

Thanks for the review pushblocker, especially for using the new proforma

I find the Toxic 3 quite a slow defensive blade, but it's also has a lot of flex and vibration, which probably makes it more suitable for chopper rather than blockers like yourself.

The fact that it's so different compared to the control version worries me a little... as sheets marked identical 'should' play identical... unless the difference is due to quality control issues...

Top sheets are the same mould but different rubber mix.. The Control pips are definetely harder than the Block..

I was shocked on how different that sheet of Control played.. Again, maybe it has to do with the different blade.. I will find out on Sunday.. I have 2 more sheets of Block OX which are still uncut.. I might also try another sheet of Block OX on the Toxic 3 to see if it's the blade. I did notice before that the Toxic 3 blade is faster than my Grubba Variant.. I use the same inverted rubber on both, the Variant and the Toxic 3 and the Toxic 3 is faster.. However, for looping, the Toxic 3 gives you a great feel of control that you don't have as much on the Variant. However, the larger size with the larger sweet spot is probably responsible for that better feel on the inverted side.

Hmmm, since I play with the 388D-1 maybe I'll have to consider giving it a go. Did you try to hit with it at all?

In this case they should have problems with ITTF because they have only one homologation for this pips.

Tried to hit with it. I did a few flat hits and it's very effective for that. Speed when hitting is very good.. None of my attacks with it came back.. However, I didn't get to attack a lot with it as my opponent was too strong and gave me little to attack.. (my training partner was a Vietnamese mid 2200 player who plays much better than that. He just doesn't play a lot of tournaments and that's why he is only in the 2200's)

Hi Olivier,
Have you ever tried using the Se7en Block on a thick balsa type of blade like my Dr. Neubauer Bulldozer?

I don't have any such blades..

Right now, I have following Blades:

2 x Stiga Offensive Classic
Butterfly Grubba Variant
Hallmark Aurora
729 Black Whirlwind Transformer
LKT Toxic 3
Hock 5 ply
Custom Jack Miller Blade

I'd love to try balsa blades but I don't know which ones might be right for me.. I really don't like oversize blades too much..

I haven't been able to figure this out since they first announced their product line on the net. How can 3 different rubber compositions all be approved when they are visually identical? Why dont they throw in a 4th that is frictionless and sell it to me? :alien:

They also sell a tacky and non-tacky inverted under one approval. At least the friction rule doesn't apply there.

If you want a frictionless version of ANY rubber, shoot me an e-mail.. I can make it happen
Of course those would only be for training purposes as they are not allowed in tournaments..
